Bioactivity of endophytic bacteria and yeasts isolated from Thymus
Authors
Abstract:
Endophytes are important resources of bioactive compounds and due to their potential in theproduction of secondary metabolites, they are regarded as a potential reservoir ofbiotechnological applications. In this study, the bioactivity of bacteria and yeasts endophytesresiding in Thymus sp. was evaluated. During April to October 2011, symptomless and healthytissues of Thymus sp. were collected. A total of 23 strains of endophytic bacteria and 6 yeastswere isolated. The bio-effects of the endophytes were studied on Botrytis cinerea and plantpathogenic bacteria Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis and Streptomyces scabies andhuman pathogens Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC. Growthinhibition mechanisms of the endophytes against B. cinerea were evaluated and it seems that theantimicrobial effects of bacterial endophytes are related to the production of protease enzyme, hydrogen cyanide and volatile compounds. Bacterial strains were identified as Bacillus,Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas of which Bacillus was the predominant isolate. For the firsttime, Bacillus is reported from Thymus eriocalyx, T. lancifolius, T. fallax, T. kotschyanus and T.vulgaris and Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas as endophytic bacteria from Thymus.

full textPhosphate solubilization by endophytic bacteria isolated from banana trees.
Forty isolates of endophytic bacteria isolated from banana tree roots were assessed as to their capacity to solubilize phosphate in a solid culture medium supplemented with different inorganic and one organic source of phosphorus. The amount of phosphorus (P) in each liquid medium was quantified, and an indirect assessment of acid phosphatase activity was performed. All assays had a fully rando...
full textBioactivity of the Extract from an Endophytic Fungi Nigrospora Oryza Isolated from Pterolobium Hexapetalum-(roth.)
Nigrospora oryzae an endophytic fungus isolated from the leaf of a climber Pterolobium hexapetalum (Roth.) Sant. and Wagh. produced bioactive compound which are active against human pathogens. The organic extract (ethanol) of the endophyte Nigrospora oryzae was separated using HPLC and tested for biological activities. The ethanol extract was tested for antibacterial and anti fungal activity us...
full textA review of phenolic antioxidants isolated from endophytic fungi
Oxidative stress caused by overproduction of free radicals or oxygenated radical species plays a major role in causing many diseases. The findings suggest the use of antioxidants as compounds to control the release of these radicals or directly prevent their formation. Therefore, antioxidants can be used as drugs to reduce or prevent oxidative stress. Herbal medicines are the basis of modern ph...
