Abstract:

Background: Studies suggest that sulfur may react with plants or monocellular organisms, such as fungi, to produce toxic agents. It has been theorized that sulfur enters cells and affects their respiration. This study reports on a phototroph development that leads to the diminution and/or production of sulfur and release of hydrogen sulfide from public ponds. Methods: This study was conducted in anoxic stabilization ponds at a dimension of 1m×0.25m×1m, with a hydraulic retention time of 6 days. The ponds’ water was tested during the dark and light cycles. The experiments were carried out by factorial design and measured three variables:  volumetric organic loading, sulphate concentrations and temperature. Results: Cyanobacteria and Rhodobacter species were the most abundant phototroph cellular organisms. The mean value of total sulfur and un-ionized hydrogen sulfide concentration were 74 mg/L and 21 mg/L, respectively, at the volumetric organic loading of 100g BOD5/m3 per day. The efficiencies of biochemical and chemical oxygen removal were 71.9% and 59.1%, respectively. The mean proliferation rate of photosynthetic sulfur bacteria was 3.4×106 cells/ml. Conclusions: photosynthetic sulfur bacteria significantly reduced the sulfur concentration generated in the ponds. The illumination of bright light enhanced the sulfur reduction by the photosynthetic sulfur bacteria in the wastewater of the anoxic stabilization ponds.

Waste Stabilization Ponds for Waste Water Treatment, Anaerobic Pond

Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) have been used world-wide over the last 50 years for municipal and industrial wastewater. The waste water treatment system has been accepted and used to change the physical, chemical, or biological character of the waste. This article presents the characteristics, parameters, and examples of the waste stabilization ponds all over the world. This work was based on...

Performance evaluation of wastewater stabilization ponds in Yazd-Iran

Background: Yazd waste stabilization pond facilities consist of three stabilization pond systems, module 1, module 2 and module 3 that AWSP module 1 has started its operation. The existing facilities have had several problems in their operation. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the performance of stabilization ponds in wastewater treatment of the city of Yazd, due to several pro...

Nuisance chironomids in waste water stabilization ponds: monitoring and action threshold assessment based on public complaints.

Large populations of non-biting midges (Chironomidae) that emerged from waste water stabilization ponds in central Israel created severe nuisance to nearby residents in 1998. A study was begun in summer 1998 to examine the dynamics and phenology of the population as a basis for a successful control strategy. The extensive waste pond area required the development of efficient, reliable and compe...

Heavy metal concentrations and toxicity in water and sediment from stormwater ponds and sedimentation tanks.

Sedimentation is a widely used technique in structural best management practices to remove pollutants from stormwater. However, concerns have been expressed about the environmental impacts that may be exerted by the trapped pollutants. This study has concentrated on stormwater ponds and sedimentation tanks and reports on the accumulated metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and the asso...

Baffle and fixed media effects on coliform removal and bacterial die-off rate coefficient in waste stabilization ponds (a case study in Ahvaz)

Background: The use of waste stabilization ponds is one of the cheapest wastewater treatment processes. This study evaluated the effects of baffles and fixed media on coliform removal in facultative lagoons. Methods: In this study, the settled wastewater from four pond systems of the city of Ahvaz was used as input. Each system was composed of two ponds that were connected to each other serial...
