Abstract:

Background: Benzene has been classified as group 1 human carcinogens in the environment by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) mainly because of its ability to cause acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This study was conducted to detect any probable association between urban benzene pollution concentration and occurrence of AML in different regions of Tehran.  Methods: In this descriptive study, demographic data of AML cases recorded in cancer registry centers of Tehran city since March 2006-2011 who met the inclusion criteria were extracted. Eligible criteria included residing in Tehran city for at least 5 years prior to diagnosis of AML. Collected data were correlated with concentration of benzene in ambient air available since March 2001 to March 2011.  Results: The majority of AML subjects were male in the age range of 20-30 years. Maximum concentration of benzene was reported from southern (11.35-106.57 ppb) and central (5.5-60.18ppb) regions of Tehran. The association between benzene concentration with occurrence of AML was observed significant for the period between March 2010 to March 2011 for male patients (Pearson correlation=0.906, P=0.05) in the age range of 30-40 years (Pearson correlation=0.893, P=0.041).  Conclusion: This study suggested probable evidence for the association between the incidence of AML and concentration of benzene in southern and central areas of Tehran city.

Urban Benzene Pollution and Population Exposure

Benzene is among the gasoline components and is airborne by vehicular traffic. It is a myelotoxic and leukaemia-inducing compound (Snyder et al., 1993; Ward et al., 1992; Vigliani and Saita, 1964). The risk level, expressed as myeloid leukaemia cases increment estimate among the population not professionally exposed to benzene, has been stated to range 3.8 to 7.5 cases every million people expo...

Unilateral Ptosis as Initial Manifestation of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Abstract Background In Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), malignant clones of immature myeloid cells (primarily blasts) proliferate, replace bone marrow, circulate in blood and invade other tissues. The unique presentation of unilateral ptosis and unilateral eyelid swelling in AML has been reported during the present study. Case Report A 7-year-old girl was encountered with progressively increa...

Relationship Between SOX17 Gene Expression and Prognosis in Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Background: Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a group of heterogeneous malignancies caused by defects in differentiation of hematopoietic cells. SRY-box containing gene 17(SOX17) is a transcription factor which plays an important role in several biological processes, including cardiogenesis, angiogenesis, and lymphopoiesis. Aberrant expression of SOX17 has been detected in solid tumors. This stud...

The Relationship between Mutation in HOXB1 Gene and Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Background: HOX genes are an exceedingly preserved family of homeodomain-involving transcription factors. They are related to a number of malignancies, comprising acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of HOXB1 7bp deletion mutation on HOXB1gene expression in 36 individuals. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was done on a large Iranian fami...

The role of microRNA in acute/chronic, myeloid/lymphocytic leukemia

MicroRNAs are small, non-coding sequences that regulate gene expression by inducing degradation or translational inhibition of target mRNAs. These molecules control many intracellular physiological and pathological processes.Abnormal expression of these moleculs has been described in different cancers including hematopoietic cancers. According to the type of cancer and the stage, miRNA’s expres...

Gene Mutations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia — Incidence, Prognostic Influence, and Association with Other Molecular Markers

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal disorder affecting pluripotent stem cells and is characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis. Most AML patients harbor cytogenetic and molecular defects that identify entities with peculiar biologic and clinical data and distinct therapeutic responses. Approximately 50%–60% of de novo AML and 80%–95% of secondary AML patients display chromosomal aberratio...
