Abstract:

Several rigorous turbulent models have been developed in the past years and it can be seen that more research is needed to reach a better understanding of their generality and precision by verifying their applications for distinct hydraulic phenomena; under certain assumptions. This survey evaluates the performance of Standard k-ε, Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε, k-ω and RSM models in predicting flow behavior in a strongly curved open channel bend. Accordingly, three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out using a state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS-Fluent14, which employs finite volume method to solve the respective governing equations. The models’ accuracy were analyzed and compared with observed data from experimental studies on a 90° open channel bend. The results indicate that although the RSM model can precisely capture all the flow characteristics in a strongly curved open channel flow, the Standard k-ε model may be considered as slightly less accurate yet much faster model.

Turbulent mixing in strongly stratified shear flows

Motivated by the importance of irreversible mixing in geophysical and environmental flows, we seek to understand the dependence of its efficiency under strongly stratified conditions through a seris of direct numerical simulation of Holmboe wave instability under various initial conditions. Our numerical findings demonstrate that while mixing is enhanced when the density layer is much sharper t...

the role of application of dynamic assessment approach in improvement of iranian efl writing performance at different language proficiency levels

the present study sought to investigate the role of dynamic assessment (da) in improvement of iranian efl writing performance at different language proficiency levels. to this end, after conducting the quick placement test, 60 iranian efl learners were assigned to two groups with different language proficiency levels. in both groups each participant wrote two compositions, one before and one af...

assessment of the efficiency of s.p.g.c refineries using network dea

data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...
