Assessing the Biological Inhibitors Effect on Crude Oil Wax Appearance Temperature Reduction
Authors
Abstract:
To assess the effect of micro-organisms on the reduction of wax appearance temperature (WAT) of waxy crude oil, some appropriate strains were obtained from contaminated samples exposed to hydrocarbon compounds for a long time. By conducting some screening tests, four strains were chosen and aerated in a bioreactor; they were then grown in some hydrocarbon environments in order to produce biological inhibitors. The ability of the biological inhibitors in wax deposition prevention or reduction of WAT is assessed. The WAT is determined by means of the optical absorption spectroscopy method. The absorption plots show that biological compounds are highly effective in reducing WAT; however, different strains are not of the same efficiency. In some cases, the efficiency of biological inhibitors is more than chemical inhibitors. The optimization experiments were run with the objective of achieving the maximum WAT reduction through the Taguchi design method, and the optimum cultivation condition was identified. According to the analysis of variance, pH with a contribution of 49.63% is the most influential factor on the cultivation of the most efficient micro-organisms. The factors of temperature, the inoculation fluid, and nitrogen concentrations are ranked after pH with the contributions of 32.39, 7.92, and 1.39% respectively.

15 صفحه اولThe Study of Temperature Profile inside Wax Deposition Layer of Waxy Crude Oil in Pipeline
Taking the axial heat conduction of wax deposition layer into account, a two-dimensional heat transfer model of calculating the temperature profile inside wax deposition layer was deduced and established based on the energy balance equation, the finite difference method was used to solve this model, and the influence of axial heat conduction on the distribution law of temperature profile inside...
full textEffect of Salinity, Temperature, pH and Crude Oil Concentration on Biodegradation of Crude Oil by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of culture conditions on biodegradation of crude oil by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa was isolated from sea water using Bushnell Haas agar supplemented with 0.1% crude oil. The strain was cultured at different temperature, pH a salinity and crude oil concentrations. Maximum growth and biodegradation occurred at 38C, pH 8.0, 35‰ an...
full textThe effect of un-saturates on low-temperature oxidation of crude oil
Low-temperature oxidation (LTO) of four Arabian crudes as well as blends of naphtha with a super-light crude was investigated employing differential thermal analysis. The mass fraction of un-saturates in the reactants varied between 0.2 and 0.9. All reactants showed LTO peaks between 230 and 264 oC; heat flow at the peak, however, varied widely. The data revealed a clear increase in LTO-generat...
full textWhite Paper: An Automatic Test Method with Improved Precision for Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) of Crude Oils
One such method, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), detects WAT by measuring the difference in heat absorbed or released between a reference sample and the test sample at a given cooling or warming rate. The WAT is detected by a deviation of experimental data from the reference baseline and typically requires a significant amount of wax formation for sensible detection. Consequently, it m...
full textThe Use of Biobased Surfactant Obtained by Enzymatic Syntheses for Wax Deposition Inhibition and Drag Reduction in Crude Oil Pipelines
Crude oil plays an important role in providing the energy supply of the world, and pipelines have long been recognized as the safest and most efficient means of transporting oil and its products. However, the transportation process also faces the challenges of asphaltene-paraffin structural interactions, pipeline pressure losses and energy consumption. In order to determine the role of drag-red...
