Assessing log extraction related soil disturbance and solutions to protect soil and reduce disturbance of forest ecosystem.

Abstract:

Skid trails are the main routes for wood extraction and also the main source of runoff and sediment production in Forests. This research was conducted in Kuhmiyan forest of Golestan Province to determine infiltration, compaction, strength (resistance to penetration) and moisture content in three treatment including control (in the forest), wheel ruts and middle of skid trail were measured in three replications and three soil depth. The results showed  that total infiltration rate and infiltration at different time intervals, were significantly the highest. Compaction, strength and moisture content were also significantly different and the maximum values belonged to wheel ruts. Correlation results showed a negative linear relation with 90% R2  adjusted between infiltration- compaction and infiltration-strengths ,these two indexes could well be indicative of permeability changes. Some of Conservation strategies are: adding slash on skid trails to reduce compaction, limiting skidding operations to dry seasons, designing dips to reduce runoff on skid trails.

Legume Plants Enhance the Resistance of Soil to Ecosystem Disturbance

Cultivation of legume plants is well known to improve soil N level and net primary productivity; besides, it may deliver other ecosystem benefits such as increasing soil carbon sequestration and soil food web complexity. However, little is known about whether legumes can improve the resistance of soils to ecosystem disturbances. In the present study, we compared the resistance of soils to an ec...

Does Soil Disturbance Affect Soil Phosphorus Fractions?

Increased turnover of organic matter as a result of soil disturbance (e.g. by soil tillage) is described in principle, but the direct influence of soil disturbance on soil P turnover especially for organic farming systems has not been sufficiently proven. The objective of the study was to evaluate the short term effect of soil disturbance on different soil P fractions in a soil shaking experime...

Visually Determined Soil Disturbance Classes Used as Indices of Forest Harvesting Disturbance

Visual estimates of soil and site disturbances are used by foresters, soil scientists, logging supervisors . and machinery operators to minimize harvest dis turbances to forest s i tes , to evaIuate compliance with forestry Best Management Pract ices (BMPs), and to determine the need for ameliorative pract ices such as tnechanical s i te preparat ion. Al though visual est imates are commonly us...

NOTE / NOTE Forest soil disturbance intervals inferred from soil charcoal radiocarbon dates

Forest soil disturbance intervals are usually too long to measure using plot-based studies, and thus they are poorly understood. The mean soil disturbance interval (MSDI) in an old-growth forest on the west coast of Vancouver Island was estimated from radiocarbon dates of charcoal from organic and mineral soil horizons. Two assumptions are required to estimate the MSDI: (1) charcoal from forest...

aSSESSING SOIL IMPaCTS RELaTED TO FOREST HaRVEST OPERaTIONS

Three studies conducted in Alabama evaluated impacts associated with a clear cut harvest in three physiographic regions. Machine impacts were assessed via tabulation of soil disturbance classes, measurement of bulk density and soil strength, or a combination of the two. Soil disturbance classes were similar among all locations with untrafficked areas comprising approximately 20 percent of the h...
