Aserological survey on antibodies against West Nile virus in horses of Khuzestan province
Authors
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borneagent that is maintained within a bird-mosquito cycle. In humansand equids, infection by this agent is usually asymptomatic, orcharacterized by a mild febrile illness. However, fatal meningoencephalitisor encephalitis may occur. OBJECTIVES:The aim ofthis study was to evaluate the prevalence of WNVinfection andcorrelation of this organism with host and environmentaldeterminants in horses in Khuzestan province. METHODS: In2011-2012, serum samples of 155 horses were randomly collectedfrom 7 zones of Khuzestan province and were examined byELISAassay. RESULTS: Seroprevalence of WNVinfection was70.3% (95% CI: 63.1-77.5%). Statistical analysis showed thatage, zone, presence of lake, type of bed, time of sampling, stayingout of the stable after sunset and the method of insect control aresignificantly associated with infection (p0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study confirm that theWNV infection exists in Khuzestan province. Considering thelocal weather conditions and the facility of vector-bornetransmission, the health authorities should take measures toprevent and control the infection.

suggests that sporotrichosis is more prevalent in tropical environments with relatively cool temperatures and high humidity such the Peruvian Andes (9), northwest India (5), southwestern Vietnam (8), and in Laos in the Plain of Jars. If this environmental association is correct, sporotrichosis may occur more extensively in the cooler humid areas of Asia, such as the highlands of China, Laos, Vi...

To the Editor: West Nile virus (WNV, Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) is emerging as a public health and veterinary concern. Since its introduction into North America in 1999, it has spread rapidly, reaching the Caribbean Basin in 2001, Mexico in 2002, El Salvador in 2003, and Colombia in 2004 (1). However, reports of equine illness and deaths in Latin America are inconclusive. With the exception of v...

West Nile virus (WNV) is a flavivirus closely related to Japanese encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses that is primarily maintained in nature by transmission cycles between mosquitoes and birds. Occasionally, WNV infects and causes disease in other vertebrates, including humans and horses. West Nile virus has re-emerged as an important pathogen as several recent outbreaks of encephal...
full textInduction of epitope-specific neutralizing antibodies against West Nile virus.
Previous studies have established that an epitope on the lateral ridge of domain III (DIII-lr) of West Nile virus (WNV) envelope (E) protein is recognized by strongly neutralizing type-specific antibodies. In contrast, an epitope against the fusion loop in domain II (DII-fl) is recognized by flavivirus cross-reactive antibodies with less neutralizing potential. Using gain- and loss-of-function ...
full textSerologic survey of West Nile virus in horses from Central-West, Northeast and Southeast Brazil
Since the emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America in 1999, there have been several reports of WNV activity in Central and South American countries. To detect WNV in Brazil, we performed a serological survey of horses from different regions of Brazil using recombinant peptides from domain III of WNV. Positive samples were validated with the neutralisation test. Our results showed tha...
