Archimedes Screw Turbine Modeling using FLOW3D and Investigating Blade Number Effect on its Performance
author
Abstract:
Due to fossil fuel limitations, the application of small-scale renewable energies has been considered. Recently, the utilization of Archimedes screw turbines, as an emerging turbine, are being increased for converting the potential and kinetic energies of water to a mechanical one. In this research, the performance of Archimedes Screw Turbine (AST) was numerically, using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, considered in Flow3D to investigate the effect of different blade numbers and rotation speeds. The two equation model and Volume of Fluid (VOF) method were used to model turbulence and water surface, respectively. The provided model was validated using experimental results. The optimal mesh cells to meshing was determined afterwards. The validation results showed that the numerical model has a good agreement with expetimental one, and a maximum efficiency of 79% was obtained. The results showed that among the investigated options, 2-bladed screw is economically and technically preferable compared to others.

Simulating Cooling Injection Effect of Trailing Edge of Gas Turbine Blade on Surface Mach Number Distribution of Blade
In this research, a gas turbine blade cascade was investigated. Flow analysis around the blade was conducted using RSM and RNG.K-ε turbulence modeling and it is simulated by Fluent software. The results were considered for the cases as Mach number loss at the trailing edge of blade caused by vortexes that were generated at the end of blade. Effect of cooling flow through the trailing edge on th...
full textA Multi-prong Study on Aerodynamic Characteristics of Archimedes Spiral-type Wind Turbine Blade
This research describes aerodynamic characteristics of small-scale wind turbine blade, called Archimedes spiral wind turbine blade. Numerical approaches on the prediction of aerodynamic performance of the blade have been conducted. Both steady and unsteady state numerical simulations using ANSYS CFX are performed on the several cases of rotating speeds. Large scale tip vortex is captured and gr...
full textFish Passage Assessment of an Advanced Hydropower Turbine and Conventional Turbine Using Blade-Strike Modeling
Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the world. However, in the Columbia and Snake River basins, several species of Pacific salmon and steelhead have been listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act due to significant declines of fish population. Dam operators and design engineers are thus faced with the task of making hydroelectric facilities more fish friendly throu...

Article history: Received: 14.06.2016. Received in revised form: 01.12.2016. Accepted: 06.12.2016. Turbochargers have become widely applied to diesel vehicle engines. The mixed flow turbine type is suitable for systems where compact power sources are required with higher boost pressure. The sensitivity of the rotor to incidence effects and tendency of the flow to separate have given rise to con...
full textEffect of Reduced Frequency on the Unsteady Aerodynamic Performance of a Wind Turbine Blade Section
The blades of wind turbines are the most important parts in producing power output. In this study, a section of a 660 KW wind turbine blade will be installed in Iran in near future was tested in a wind tunnel. In addition to steady tests, various unsteady tests including the effects of reduced frequency, mean angle of attack, and amplitudes were carried out. The preliminary results show strong ...
