Application of guide blades for improving performance of savonius wind turbine

Authors

Abstract:

Application of guide blades is an appropriate method for improving aerodynamic performance of savonius wind turbine. Guide blades gather the wind energy around the turbine and guide them into the concave side of savonius rotor. In this paper, numerical investigation is conducted for evaluating effect of the guide blades on the performance of savonius turbine. Aerodynamic performance of the turbine is investigated for different numbers (3, 4 and 5) and angles (30°, 40°, 50° and 60°) of guide blades. Numerical results indicate that the turbine power and torque coefficients are increased significantly by adding guide blades. For a 5-bladed stator with a 30° blade angle, the turbine maximum power coefficient is increased to 0.51 which shows about 183% compared to a conventional single rotor with maximum power coefficient of 0.18. Turbine with 4 and 6-bladed stator design has maximum power coefficients of 0.42 and 0.49 respectively which show an increase of about 133 and 171% in comparison to a conventional single rotor. Power coefficient of the turbine with 5-bladed stator has a bigger optimum range of operation in comparison with 4 and 6-bladed stator design.

Slotted Blades Savonius Wind Turbine Analysis by CFD

In this paper a new bucket configuration for a Savonius wind generator is proposed. Numerical analyses are performed to estimate the performances of the proposed configuration by means of the commercial code COMSOL Multiphysicsr with respect to Savonius wind turbine with overlap only. Parametric analyses are performed, for a fixed overlap ratio, by varying the slot position; the results show th...

Materials for Wind Turbine Blades: An Overview

A short overview of composite materials for wind turbine applications is presented here. Requirements toward the wind turbine materials, loads, as well as available materials are reviewed. Apart from the traditional composites for wind turbine blades (glass fibers/epoxy matrix composites), natural composites, hybrid and nanoengineered composites are discussed. Manufacturing technologies for win...

Aerodynamic Optimal Design of Wind Turbine Blades using Genetic Algorithm

Wind power has been widely considered and utilized in recent years as one of the most promising renewable energy sources. In the current research study, aerodynamic analysis of the upwind three-bladed horizontal axis turbine is carried out using blade element momentum theory (BEM), and a genetic algorithm (GA) is applied as an optimization method. Output power generation is considered as an obj...

Wind Flow Analysis of Twisted Savonius Micro-Turbine Array

This paper provides a computational analysis of wind impact on different geometric configurations of Savonius turbines proposed and previously studied in specialized literature. As a result of comparative analysis of turbines, we performed a flow analysis over a microturbine array, proposed a twisted Savonius turbine respecting its original profile, and subjected it to a comparative analysis of...

Preliminary Development Of Prototype Of Savonius Wind Turbine For Application In Low Wind Speed In Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

Wind turbine is a technology which converting wind energy to electric power. Wind energy is easily accessible anywhere in the world and is one of renewable energy. However, in Kuala Terengganu, the lower average wind speed become one of the factors wind turbine has not been used widely as alternative method for generating the electric power. Thereby, small scale wind turbine which can generate ...
