Application of Dose-Area Product compared with three other dosimetric quantities used to estimate patient effective dose in diagnostic radiology
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Application of Dose-area product (DAP) quantity has been increased in the clinical practice. DAP is relatively easy to measure. DAP has been shown to correlate well with the total energy imparted to the patient, which is related to the effective dose. Material and Methods: In this study, measurements of DAP were carried out in a sample of 421 adult patients who underwent conventional radiological examinations. Then, by using DAP some useful dosimetric quantities such as exposure area product (EAP), air kerma and entrance surface dose (ESD) were estimated. Furthermore, ESD was calculated by a Multi-O-Meter dosemeter. Effective doses were computed by measurement of DAP and corresponding conversion factors. Finally, the effective dose was determined using: i) ESD and data published by NRPB. ii) energy imparted derived from DAP, and iii) ODS-60 package. Results: The effective dose values derived from the four methods are in good agreement. The mean effective dose estimated from DAP measurement were 0.13, 0.42, 0.05, 0.59, 0.54 and 0.03 mSv/projection for chest, abdomen, cervical spine, lumbar spine, pelvis and skull examinations, respectively. Conclusion: Indirect effective dose determination using the NRPB dosimetric data and the measured value of DAP or ESD allows for reliable estimates of effective dose. The ODS-60 software was used in this study because it has the flexibility to manipulate the technical parameters of an examination and patient's parameters.

full textMethods used to estimate the collective dose in Denmark from diagnostic radiology
According to EU directive 97/43/Euratom all member states must estimate doses to the public from diagnostic radiology. In Denmark the National Institute of Radiation Hygiene (NIRH) is about to finish a project with the purpose of estimating the collective dose in Denmark from diagnostic radiology. In this paper methods, problems and preliminary results will be presented. Patient doses were obta...
full textMeasurement of Entrance Skin Dose and Effective Dose in The most Common Diagnostic radiology Examinations in Jiroft, Iran
Introduction: Medical uses of radiation have grown very rapidly over in the past two decades, medical uses represent the largest source of exposure to people, The most important methods in medical diagnosis are the useses of diagnostic radiology exams. Although the use of these methods is very beneficial for the treatment of patients, but ionizing radiation produces ion pairs, ...
full textSize specific dose estimate (SSDE) for estimating patient dose from CT used in myocardial perfusion SPECT/CT
Objective(s): Size specific dose estimate (SSDE) is a new parameter that includes patient size factor in its calculation. Recent studies have produced mixed results on the utility of SSDE, especially when automatic exposure control (AEC) was used. The objective of the study was to find out if there is a relationship between patient size and each of the parameters, SSDE...
full textDose-area product measurements in panoramic dental radiology.
In this study, dose-area product (DAP) measurements in panoramic dental radiology have been performed in Germany. The results obtained in this study were proposed as diagnostic reference levels (DRLs). A representative number of dental panoramic units, both with digital and conventional image receptors, have been chosen. Common statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation and 3rd qua...
full textEffective dose and energy imparted in diagnostic radiology.
The patient effective dose, E, is an indicator of the stochastic radiation risk associated with radiographic or fluoroscopic x-ray examinations. Determining effective doses for radiologic examinations by measurement or calculation is generally very difficult. By contrast, the energy imparted, epsilon, to the patient may be obtained from the x-ray exposure-area product incident on the patient. A...
