Abstract:
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) from the Caryophyllaceae family is a perennial shrub that is grown commercially for two years. This cut flower is non-climacteric and sensitive to vascular blockage. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of geranium, eucalyptus and myrtle essential oils on postharvest life of carnation flower in a completely randomized design with 10 treatments in three levels (values of 2, 6 and 10 ml in 600 ml of distilled water from each essential oil and control. In this experiment, traits such as vase life, water uptake, petal protein content, leaf and petal pigments, stem and solution end bacteria and the activity of some enzymes were measured. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of treatments on all measured traits was significant. Mean comparison of treatments showed that both 2 ml myrtle and eucalyptus treatments induced the highest vase life with 15.73 and 15.13 days, respectively, compared to the control with 9.47 days. The highest content of total chlorophyll (11.39 mg g–1 F.W.) was obtained in cut flowers treated with 2 ml eucalyptus. The 2 ml myrtle treatment increased the absorption of water, carotenoids, proteins and superoxide dismutase activity. Counting the vase solution and stem end bacteria showed that the minimum bacteria colony in vase solution (55.00) and stem end (88.00) was obtained in cut flowers treated with 2 ml eucalyptus. Maximum bacteria colony in vase solution (98.33) and stem end (162.00) was counted in control cut flowers. The 10 ml myrtle treatment is not recommended to increase the vase life of carnation cut flowers.

Climacteric vs Non-climacteric
Fruits can be divided into two groups according to the regulatory mechanisms underlying their ripening process. Climacteric fruit, such as tomato, apple, pear, and melon are characterized by a ripening-associated increase in respiration and in ethylene production, the phytohormone ethylene being the major trigger and coordinator of the ripening process. By contrast, nonclimacteric fruits, such ...
full textInteraction of 1-Methylcyclopropene and Thidiazuron on Cut Stock Flowers Vase Life
Leaf yellowing or petal senescence is the main postharvest disorder for many cut flowers. Plant hormones such as cytokinins are able to inhibit leaf yellowing in some cut flowers and potted plants. In our experiments, we applied thidiazuron aiming to delay leaf yellowing and 1-methylciclopropene (1-MCP) for inhibiting flower senescence of cut stock flowers during vase life. Cut flowers were pul...
full text2,4-Pyridinedicarboxylic Acid Prolongs the Vase Life of Cut Flowers of Spray Carnations
2,4-Pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDCA) is a structural analog of 2-oxoglutarate and has been shown to inhibit 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases by competing with 2-oxoglutarate, and ethylene production in detached carnation flowers by competing with ascorbate on 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) oxidase action. In the present study, the inhibition of ACC oxidase action by PDCA was confi...
full textPsidium guajava and Piper betle Leaf Extracts Prolong Vase Life of Cut Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) Flowers
The effect of leaf extracts of Psidium guajava and Piper betle on prolonging vase life of cut carnation flowers was studied. "Carola" and "Pallas Orange" carnation flowers, at bud stage, were pulsed 24 hours with a floral preservative. Then, flowers were placed in a vase solution containing sprite and a "germicide" (leaf extracts of P. guajava and P. betle, 8-HQC, or a copper coin). Flowers tre...
full textEffect of Some Chemical Treatments on Keeping Quality and Vase Life of Chrysanthemum Cut Flowers
The experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different concentrations of salicylic acid (SA), malic acid ( MA), citric acid (CA) and sucrose (Suc) on keeping quality and vase life of Chrysanthemum cut flowers. In this study three levels of malic acid (0, 100 and 150 mg l ) and salicylic acid (0, 1.5 and 3 mM) and two levels of sucrose (0 and 3% w/v) and of citric acid (0 and 150 ...
full textImpact of Exogenous Spermine Application on the Vase Life of Cut Rose Flowers ‘Dolce Vita’
Senescence is an integral part of the normal developmental cycle of plants and can be traced in cell, tissue and organ level. This work was focused on the efficiency of post-harvest treatment with the free polyamine spermine (Spm) to extend the vase life of cut rose flowers as an anti-senescence compound. Spm treatment was applied at the rates of 0, 1, 2 and 4 mM. Some morphological, biochemica...
