Antioxidant Effects of Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Extract on Ram Sperm Quality during Cryopreservation
Authors
Abstract:
Oxidative stress during freezing-thawing reduces sperm motility, viability, membrane functions and antioxidant capacity. Thymus vulgaris has antioxidant properties due to phenolic compounds. The purpose of current study was to evaluate the effect of Thymus vulgaris extract as a natural antioxidant on post-thawed Moghani ram sperm quality. Semen samples were collected twice a week from four rams. Samples were then pooled and diluted with Tris based extender supplemented with different concentrations of Thymus vulgaris (0, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 mL per dL diluent solutions). Following the cooling and equilibration stages for semen samples, the samples were frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen until evaluation. Following this freezing procedure, samples were thawed, and the sperm motility and velocity parameters, viability and plasma membrane integrity were evaluated. Our results showed that the addition of 2 and 4 mL/dL extracts at the extender stage increased the total motility percentages (P

full textEffects of Thyme Extract Oils (from Thymus vulgaris, Thymus zygis, and Thymus hyemalis) on Cytokine Production and Gene Expression of oxLDL-Stimulated THP-1-Macrophages
Properties of thyme extracts from three different species (Thymus vulgaris, Thymus zygis, and Thymus hyemalis) were examined. Two oil fractions from each species were obtained by CO(2) supercritical fluid extraction. Main compounds presented in the supercritical extracts of the three thyme varieties were 1,8 cineole, thymol, camphor, borneol, and carvacrol. As a cellular model of inflammation/a...
full textBioactive Compounds of Cold-pressed Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) Oil with Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties.
Herbs rich in bioactive phytochemicals were recognized to have biological activities and possess many health-promoting effects. In this work, cold-pressed thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) oil (TO) was studied for its lipid classes, fatty acid profile, tocols and phenolics contents. Antioxidant activity and radical scavenging potential of TO against free radicals (DPPH(・) and galvinoxyl) was determine...

Antioxidative effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) in sunflower oil.
BACKGROUND Lipid oxidation is a main problem during food processing, storage and consumption leading to losses of quality, stability, safety and nutritive value. Antioxidants have been used to prevent oxidation changes and off - flavor development in food products. Aim of the research was to evaluate antioxidative effect of thyme ethanol extract on sunflower oil during its storage in different ...
