Antibacterial Properties of Ozonated Sunflower (Helianthus Annuus l.) and Sesame (Sesamum Indicum L.) Oils on Staphylococcus Aureus
Authors
Abstract:
Background and Aims: Staphylococcus aureus infection needs long-term treatment with antibiotics which may cause adverse effects on many body organs and antibiotics resistance. Therefore, the use of natural and herbal compounds has been under consideration. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the effects of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and sesame (Sesamum indicum) oils were assessed on S. aureus growth regarding zone of inhibited growth (Antibiogram test), Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Results & Discussion: considering antibiogram test, there was a statistically significant difference between sesame and sunflower oil (72 hours ozonate) and pure sesame and sunflower oils and ciprofloxacin antibiotic, as well as negative control distilled water after 24 and 48 hours (P≤0.05). The results showed that antibiotic, ozonated water, ozonated sesame and sunflower oils had 12, 8, 4, and 3 mm inhibition zones after 24 hours on S. aureus bacteria, respectively. The MBC and MIC values of ozonated sunflower and sesame oil on S. aureus were 0.064, 0.022, 0.032 and 0.028 mg/mL, respectively. Sesame and sunflower oils can be used as inhibitors of the growth of S. aureus in pharmaceutical formulations such as wound and burn healing ointments.

Floral Biology and pollination requirements of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)
This study aimed to investigate the floral biology and pollination requirements of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.), cultivar CNPA G2. The study was carried out at Barbalha, State of Ceará, and consisted of two phases: floral biology and pollination requirements. Flowers were observed as for time of anthesis, lifespan and stigma receptivity, and were applied the following pollination treatments: ope...
full textTOLERANCE OF SUNFLOWER (Helianthus annuus L.) TO IMAZETHAPYR
The response of RIMI [imazethapyr-tolerant (T)] sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrid and the local imazethapyr-sensitive hybrid "Zoltan" (S) was investigated under controlled conditions. Hybrids grown in pots were treated post-emergence with imazethapyr at the two pairs of leaves stage. Visual injury evaluation and vegetative parameters were recorded. ALS (acetolactate synthase) enzyme activ...
full textCavitation fatigue and its reversal in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.).
"Cavitation fatigue" is the increased susceptibility of a xylem conduit to cavitation as a result of its prior cavitation. It was investigated whether cavitation fatigue induced in vivo could be repaired in intact plants. Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) were subjected to soil drought in the greenhouse. Native embolism and vulnerability to cavitation was measured in well-watered controls and a...
full textComplete Mitochondrial Genome Sequence of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
This is the first complete mitochondrial genome sequence for sunflower and the first complete mitochondrial genome for any member of Asteraceae, the largest plant family, which includes over 23,000 named species. The master circle is 300,945-bp long and includes 27 protein-coding sequences, 18 tRNAs, and the 26S, 5S, and 18S rRNAs.

The amino acid sequences of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) and castor (Ricinus communis L.) cytochrome c were determined by using 1.5mumol of protein from each species. Both molecules consist of a single chain of 111 amino acid residues and are homologous with other mitochondrial cytochrome c molecules. Both have an N-acetylated ;tail' of eight amino acids and two in-N-trimethyl-lysine residues, a...
full textFirst Record of Alternaria simsimi Causing Leaf Spot on Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in Korea
Leaf spot disease was observed in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) during 2009 and 2010 in Korea. The pathogen was identified as Alternaria simsimi based on morphological and cultural characteristics. The morphological identification was well supported by phylogenetic analysis of the ribosomal DNA-internal transcribed spacer region. A. simsimi isolates caused spot symptoms on leaves and stems of ses...
