Abstract:

Background: Vaccinium arctostaphylos L. (Caucasian whortleberry) fruit is used as an anti-hyperglycemic agent for treatment of diabetes mellitus. Objective: The effects of whortleberry fruit and leaf extracts on the blood levels of fasting glucose, HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin), insulin, creatinine and liver enzymes SGOT and SGPT in alloxan-diabetic rats as well as LD50s of the extracts in rats were studied. Methods: The effects of 2 months daily gavage of each extract at the doses of 250 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg on the parameters after single alloxan intraperitoneal injection at a dose of 125 mg/kg in the rats were evaluated. To calculate LD50 (median lethal dose), each extract was gavaged to groups of 30 healthy male and female Wistar rats at various doses once and the number of dead animals in each group within 72 hours was determined. Results: Alloxan injection resulted in significant increase of fasting glucose and HbA1c levels but decreased insulin levels significantly. Oral administration of whortleberry fruit and leaf extracts (each at the doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) significantly reduced the fasting glucose and HbA1c levels but significantly increased the insulin levels without any significant effects on the SGOT, SGPT and creatinine levels in the diabetic rats compared with the control diabetic rats. The LD50s of the extracts were more than 15 g/kg. Conclusion: Whortleberry fruits and leaves may have anti-hyperglycemic and blood insulin level elevating effects without hepatic and renal toxicities in the alloxan-diabetic rats and are relatively nontoxic in rats.

Anti-Diabetic Activity of Terminalia catappa Linn. Leaf Extracts in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

In view of suggested anti diabetic potential, effect of aqueous and cold extracts of Terminalia Catappa Linn (Combretaceae) leaves, on fasting blood sugar levels and serum biochemical analysis in alloxan-induced diabetic rats was investigated. All the extracts of Terminalia Catappa produced a significant anti diabetic activity at dose levels of 1/5th of their lethal doses. Concurrent histologic...

Anti-hyperglycemic Effects of Saffron and its Active Constituents, Crocin and Safranal, in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

Background: Saffron is the dried stigmata of the flowers of saffron (Crocus sativus L., Iridaceae). Saffron and its major active constituents, crocin (crocetin glycoside), crocetin and safranal, have a variety of pharmacological effects including high antioxidant properties and crocetin has insulin sensitizing effect possibly due to its antioxidant activity. Oral crocin is not absorbed and is h...

Evaluation of Anti-hyperglycemic potential of Bauhinia Tomentosa standardized extracts in streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats

In India, the occurrence of diabetes mellitus is on increase and needs to be addressed properly. Herbal remedies are considered most suitable for the management of type 2 diabetes due to their traditional acceptability and availability, low costs, and fewer side effects. Traditionally Bauhinia tomentosa L. (Family- Fabaceae) is used in the treatment of diabetes in India. Aqueous extrac...

Pomegranate peel attenuates hyperglycemic effects of alloxan-induced diabetic rats

Dear Editor, Diabetes is a major epidemic chronic metabolic ailment worldwide (WHO, 2008). It is characterized by insufficiency of insulin secretion and/or action, insulin resistance, and abnormal metabolism of glucose, lipid and protein (WHO, 2008; Middha et al., 2011). Today, diabetes has become a pandemic affecting approximately 5 % of people in both developed and developing countries. Globa...

Anti-hyperglycemic effect of Vaccinium arctostaphylos in type 2 diabetic patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common disease. Preliminary data indicate that Vaccinium arctostaphylos L. (Caucasian whortleberry) has a potential effect in glycemic control. Thus, the efficacy and safety of a standardized whortleberry fruit hydroalcoholic extract in the treatment of type 2 diabetic patients were studied. METHODS This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clini...
