Abstract:

Citral is a major constituent of Cymbopogon citratus or lemongrass oil. The anti-clastogenic effect of citral (20 mg/kg) was tested against the known mutagens cyclophoshamide, mitomycin-C and nickel metal (NiCl2) in mice. Micronucleus (MN) frequency was evaluated in both bone marrow and peripheral blood erythrocytes. The sampling was done after 24 h, 48 h and 72 h of clastogen treatment. Results show that citral had significantly (p < 0.01) decreased the frequency of MN induced by the three clastogens in bone marrow and peripheral blood erythrocytes.

The dual clastogenic and anti-clastogenic properties of quercetin is dose dependent.

Iron is a ubiquitous constituent of cytochromes, oxygen-binding molecules and a variety of enzymes because of its property to transition from ferric (Fe3+) to ferrous (Fe2+) state, leading to change in the redox potential. However, the same property accounts for free radical injury. In order to overcome harmful effects of iron we investigated the possible protective effect of quercetin (QCT), a...

Spasmolytic and anti-inflammatory effects of Aloysia triphylla and citral, in vitro and in vivo studies.

Aloysia triphylla is traditionally utilized for the treatment of menstrual colic (primary dysmenorrhea) in Mexico. Citral is the main chemical component found in Aloysia triphylla leaves extract. Primary dysmenorrhea is a very frequent gynecological disorder in menstruating women, affecting 30-60% of them. It is usually treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); although their...

The clastogenic effects of Aflatoxin B 1 ( AFB

In this study the effects of AFB1, a mold metabolite, on third instar larval salivary gland polytene chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster were investigated. The various chromosomal abnormalities (= aberrations) as fragment loss from teminal, semibreak, asynapsis, regional shrinking, ectopic pairing on arms of polytene chromosome, were observed in polytene chromosome slides from third instar l...

Clastogenic effects of different Ureaplasma urealyticum serovars on human chromosomes.

The possibility that Ureaplasma urealyticum might play an important role in human infertility was first raised more than 20 years ago, but this association remains speculative. Considering the hypothesis that the pathogenicity of Ureaplasma urealyticum may depend on its serotypes, the clastogenic effects of different strains of Ureaplasma urealyticum, at concentrations of 10(3) CCU (color chang...

In vitro effects of citral on trypanosoma cruzi metacyclogenesis.

Citral, the main constituent of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil, was added to Trypanosoma cruzi cultures grown in TAU3AAG medium to observe the effect on the epimastigote-to-trypomastigote differentiation process (metacyclogenesis). Our results showed that citral (20 μg/mL) did not affect epimastigote viability or inhibit the differentiation process. Concentrations higher than 60...
