Abstract Background and Aim: It has been shown that bonding agents reduce the sealant micro-leakage especially after salivary contamination. This study attempts to evaluate the effect of a bonding agent (Single-Bond) and salivary contamination on a sealant micro-leakage (Embrace). Materials and Methods: In this study a wet-bonding sealant (Embrace) was used in 64 sound human premolars after being etched with 35% phosphoric acid. The sealant micro-leakage was investigated under four different conditions: 1) Saliva + Bonding, 2) with bonding alone, 3) with saliva and 4) sealant alone. After thermocycling process, the teeth were covered with wax & nail polish except for 1-1.5 mm around the sealant. The samples were rinsed after immersed in 0.5% basic - fushin solution for 24 hours. Two buccolingual sections were prepared from central and proximal areas of the crowns. The micro-leakage was assessed according to the degree of dye penetration around the sealants. Results: Dye penetration occurred in 5 cases of group 3 which was more than other groups. In the first group, 8 cases had a score more than 1, one less than the other groups. The Kruskal-Wallis test did not show any significant statistical differences between the groups. Conclusion: The use of a bonding agent, prior to application of a Wet-bonding fissure sealant, does not have a significant effect on the micro-leakage of Embrace Sealant in isolated or saliva contaminated conditions. Key words: Fissure sealant - Micro-leakage - Saliva contamination - Wet bonding Corresponding Author: Pedodontics Dept., Faculty of Dentistry, Hamedan University of Medical Sciences. e.mail: [email protected]

Effects of sealant, viscosity, and bonding agents on microleakage of fissure sealants: An in vitro study

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of enamel or dentin bonding agent (DBA) and sealant viscosity on sealant microleakage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty extracted human premolars were randomly divided into two equal groups (based on sealant viscosity) and each group was divided into three subgroups of 10 teeth. Group 1 (low viscosity sealant, Seal-Rite, Pulpdent, USA wit...

Effect of Different Enamel Preparation Methods on Microleakage of Fissure Sealant: An In Vitro Study

Objective: Lack of a dental material with optimal adhesion and sealability is an important challenge in modern dentistry leading to marginal leakage. There are controversies on the necessity of enamel preparation in pit and fissure sealant therapy and its effect on decreasing the microleakage therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to assess the amount of microleakage with and without ename...

Self-etching bonding systems: in-vitro micro-leakage evaluation.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare dentine and enamel micro-leakage values of six self-etching bonding agents to that of a total etch dentine bonding agent (used as a control). Products evaluated were Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus (3M/ESPE), Xeno III (Dentsply), Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray), ABF (Kuraray), Optibond Solo Self-Etch (Kerr), OneCoatSE Bond (Colténe Whaledent), and iBond...

effect of enamel bonding agents on pit and fissure sealant retention in an isolated situation

objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of enamel bonding agents on pit and fissure sealant retention in a well-isolated situation. materials and methods: thirty-two patients (6-9 years old, all males) with four fully erupted permanent first molars were selected. their occlusal, buccal, and lingual fissures were sealed according to a split-mouth design using concise light ...

Use of a bonding agent to reduce sealant sensitivity to moisture contamination: an in vitro study.

Moisture contamination of etched enamel during application of sealant is the most frequently cited reason for sealant failure. In preliminary studies, a dentin bonding agent (Scotchbond Dual Cure, 3M, St. Paul, MN) has been shown to bond adequately to etched enamel after salivary contamination. This study investigated bond strength in vitro, when a bonding agent was used beneath sealants under ...
