Abstract:

In this paper, an experimental investigation on ultrasonic welding of polyamide composites reinforced with glass fiber has been carried out. The effect of ultrasonic welding parameters, such as welding time, air pressure, hold time and the amount of glass fiber in the composite on tensile strength of weld joints were determined using response surface methodology. This methodology was applied for developing a mathematical model which can predict the main effects of the above parameters and their impacts on tensile strength of T-welded ultrasonic joints in 4-mm thick polyamide composite sheets. The analysis of variance was performed to check the adequacy of the developed model. A comparison was also made between the predicted and actual results. The results showed that a maximum failure force of about 4759 N is obtained when vibration amplitude, air pressure welding time, holding time and amount of glass fiber are 35 microns, 3.6 bar, 1.84 seconds, 0.9 seconds and 41 percent, respectively .The joint strength of welded parts increased with the fiber content in the composites.

Improving Fatigue Strength of Welded Joints by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment

Enhancement in fatigue performance of welded joints by Ultrasonic Impact Treatment (UIT) was evaluated with large-scale rolled beam and built-up specimens having yield strength of 345 to 760 MPa. Eighteen rolled-beam specimens having welded details at cover plates and transverse stiffeners and eight built-up specimens having only transverse stiffener details were fatigue tested after treating t...

An Experimental Study on the process parameters of Incremental Forming of Explosively-Welded Al/Cu Bimetal

Single point incremental sheet metal forming is a sheet metal forming process that forms products without the complex dies and tools with low cost. In this study, the incremental sheet metal forming process has been experimentally investigated on the explosively-welded Al/Cu bimetal sheets. Also, the effects of process parameters, such as arrangement of layer`s bimetal, tool diameter and tool p...

The Effect of Welding Energy on the Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Ultrasonic-Welded Copper Joints

The effects of welding energy on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of ultrasonic-welded pure copper plates were investigated. Complex dynamic recrystallization and grain growth occurred inside the weld zone during ultrasonic welding. At a low welding energy, a thin band of straight weld interfaces was observed and had an ultra-fine grain structure. With an increase in welding e...

Investigation on Tensile Strength of Friction Stir Welded Joints in PP/EPDM/Clay Nanocomposites

Polymer-based nanocomposites due to their advantages such as corrosion resistance, adequate mechanical properties and low cost are widely used in modern technologies. The increasing application of these nanocomposites, and hence their welding seems unavoidable. In this paper, a novel hottool in friction stir welding process is used for butt welding nanocomposite plates of 5 mm thick containing p...

The Effect of Ultrasonic Peening Treatment on Fatigue Performance of Welded Joints

Ultrasonic peening treatment (UPT) as a method of severe plastic deformation was used to treat cruciform welded joints of Q345 steel. The application of UPT achieves material surface nanocrystallization of the peening zone, reduces stress concentration, and produces residual compressive stresses at the welded toe. Micro-structure, hardness, stress relief, S-N curve, and the fatigue fracture mec...
