ALPHA -TOCOPHEROL IN CANCER
Authors
Abstract:
Serum alpha-tocopherol of98(62 male and 36 female) cancer patients and 30 (13 male and 17 female) control healthy subjects was investigated. The cancer patients showed a significantly low level of alpha-tocopherol as compared to control healthy subjects. Also, significantly higher levels of serum alpha-tocopherol were found in complete remission patients as compared to the partial response patients.

full textAlpha-tocopherol concentration in fetal and maternal tissues of pregnant rats supplemented with alpha-tocopherol.
We wanted to determine whether alpha-tocopherol supplementation to pregnant rats could increase the concentration of alpha-tocopherol in maternal and fetal plasma and tissues. Pregnant rats were treated with alpha-tocopherol on days 18 and 19 gestation and studied at day 20. A control group was studied in parallel. Treatment of pregnant rats with alpha-tocopherol increased its concentration in ...
full textIron in relation to gastric cancer in the Alpha-tocopherol, Beta-carotene Cancer Prevention Study.
BACKGROUND Iron is an essential micronutrient that can have carcinogenic effects when at high or low concentrations. Previous studies of iron in relation to gastric cancer have not assessed subtype-specific relationships. We used the prospective Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene (ATBC) Cancer Prevention Study to assess whether iron metrics were associated with gastric cardia cancer (GCC) and gast...
full textAlpha-Tocopherol Transfer Protein (α-TTP): Insights from Alpha-Tocopherol Transfer Protein Knockout Mice
Alpha-tocopherol transfer protein (alpha-TTP) is a liver cytosolic transport protein that faciliates alpha-tocopherol (alpha-T) transfer into liver secreted plasma lipoproteins. Genetic defects in alpha-TTP, like dietary vitamin E deficiency, are associated with infertility, muscular weakness and neurological disorders. Both human and alpha-TTP deficient (alpha-TTP(-/-)) mice exhibit severe pla...
full textVitamin D and pancreatic cancer risk in the alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene cancer prevention cohort.
In this issue, Stolzenberg-Solomon et al. report that higher circulating 25-hydroxy-vitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations are associated with a higher risk of pancreatic cancer in the AlphaTocopherol Beta-Carotene (ATBC) cancer prevention cohort. Based on the large literature on vitamin D and cancer, this finding is most unexpected and should be interpreted with caution. These results are not nece...
