Abstract:

This paper deals with the leader-follower formation control problem while communication constraint in data transmitting is considered. From a practical point of view, we study the case in which unmanned vehicles are subject to the limited sensing, and communication is of a particular interest. A three-dimensional formation flight of multi-unmanned aerial vehicles with leader-follower configuration is investigated. We assume that the follower is equipped with an airborne seeker to measure the relative kinematic parameters with respect to the leader. Considering practical measurements of the airborne seeker, the kinematics of the leader-follower system is derived and by employing a cascade loop controller, the relative angle and the relative range are regulated to reach at the desired formation. Moreover, by modeling the seeker mechanism, the effect of the seeker dynamics and sensor measurement noise on the performance of the proposed formation control scheme are studied. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed leader-follower formation control structure

Formation Flight of Multiple UAVs via Onboard Sensor Information Sharing

To monitor large areas or simultaneously measure multiple points, multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) must be flown in formation. To perform such flights, sensor information generated by each UAV should be shared via communications. Although a variety of studies have focused on the algorithms for formation flight, these studies have mainly demonstrated the performance of formation flight u...

Three Dimensional Receding Horizon Control for UAVs

This paper presents a receding horizon controller (RHC) that can be used to design trajectories for an aerial vehicle flying through a three dimensional terrain with obstacles and no-fly zones. To avoid exposure to threats, the paths are chosen to stay as close to the terrain as possible, but the vehicle can choose to pop-up over the obstacles if necessary. The approach is similar to our previo...

Three-dimensional kinematics of hummingbird flight.

Hummingbirds are specialized for hovering flight, and substantial research has explored this behavior. Forward flight is also important to hummingbirds, but the manner in which they perform forward flight is not well documented. Previous research suggests that hummingbirds increase flight velocity by simultaneously tilting their body angle and stroke-plane angle of the wings, without varying wi...

Three-Dimensional Modeling of Combustion Process, Soot and NOx formation In a Direct-injection Diesel Engine

This paper is presented to study the combustion process and emissions in a direct injection diesel engine. Computations are carried out using a three-dimensional model for flows, sprays, combustion and emissions in Diesel engines. Interactions between combustion and emissions with flow field are considered and it is shown that soot mass fraction increases at regions with low turbulence inten...
