A Review on Energy Storage Systems Planning in Active Distribution Networks and its Applications

Authors

Abstract:

With the restructuring of power systems, increase of renewable energy sources, and as networks become smarter, power systems are facing new challenges such as uncertainty in available energy resources. An appropriate solution to address these challenges are to use energy storage systems. Therefore, sizing, location, and selection of energy storage systems are important to maximize their benefits. This paper is a review of research studies, examines the types of energy storage systems, their applications, methods of formulating objective functions and methods of solution. Another purpose of this paper is to investigate the issue of optimal Energy Storage System (ESS) planning in active distribution networks. It also provides a broad classification of the Storage Expansion Planning (SEP); and by reviewing several papers, it identifies trends and challenges, and suggestions for future work in this area.

Resilience Enhancement of Active Distribution Networks Via Mobile Energy Storage Systems and Protection Coordination Consideration

Owing to the portability and flexibility of mobile energy storage systems (MESSs), they seem to be a promising solution to improve the resilience of the distribution system (DS). So, this paper presents a rolling optimization mechanism for dispatching MESSs and other resources in microgrids in case of a natural disaster occurrence. The proposed mechanism aims to minimize the total system cost b...

Optimal Planning of Battery Energy Storage Systems for Mitigating Voltage Fluctuations in Active Distribution Networks

Variations in solar irradiance and wind speed cause fluctuations in voltage of distribution networks. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are usually installed in the distribution networks to mitigate the effects of these voltage fluctuations. The lifespan of a BESS-battery is affected by various factors such as the operating temperature, the level of depth of discharge and the magnitude of ...

Optimal energy management of the photovoltaic based distribution networks considering price responsive loads, energy storage systems and convex power flows.

Nowadays, presence of photovoltaic systems in distribution network is not without challenge and it may not have economic productivity for the system under the lack of optimal management. Energy storage systems are able to cope with this problem. Therefore, in this paper, a new method is proposed for energy management of the distribution networks in order to show that how presence of the energy ...

A Comprehensive Study on a Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage System and its Feasible Applications in Greenhouses

Abstract Energy crisis is a major challenge in the current world. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems are known as equipment with promising performance by which thermal energy can be recovered. In the present study a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation is performed on a LHTES system containing PEG1000 as phase change material (PCM). Discussed topics can be ca...
