A new paradigm for physiologic ventricular pacing.
Clinical trials in patients with pacemakers for sinus node dysfunction or atrioventricular block (AVB) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators provide increasing evidence showing that desynchronization of ventricular electrical activation and contraction, induced by conventional right ventricular apex (RVA) pacing, is a serious threat for long-term cardiac morbidity and mortality. The risk ...
full textConfusions about race: a new installment.
In his criticism of my paper on the concept of race (Sesardic, 2010), Adam Hochman raises many issues that deserve further clarification. First, I will comment on Hochman’s claim that I attack a straw man version of racial constructionism. Second, I will try to correct what I see as a distorted historical picture of the debate between racial naturalists and racial constructionist s. Third, I wi...

functional impairment; magnitude of task, and magnitude of effort. At the baseline state, dyspnea was rated in five grades from 0 (severe) to 4 (unimpaired) for each category. The ratings for each of the three categories were added to form a baseline focal score (range, 0 to 12). At the transition period, changes in dyspnea were rated by seven grades, ranging from 3 (major deterioration), to + ...
full textPhysiologic evaluation of a new antihypertensive agent: prazosin HCl.
The mechanism of action of prazosin hydrochloride, a new antihypertensive agent was studied in 14 patients with essential hypertension. Mean supine blood pressure for the group fell from 148/102 +/- 3/2 (SE) mm Hg at baseline to 139/91 +/- 5/4 after eight weeks of therapy (P less than 0.05). No significant postural hypotension was noted in the patients who responded to therapy. Glomerular filtr...

The newly inaugurated Research Resource for Complex Physiologic Signals, which was created under the auspices of the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health, is intended to stimulate current research and new investigations in the study of cardiovascular and other complex biomedical signals. The resource has 3 interdependent components. PhysioBank is a large a...
full textManager Race and the Race of New Hires
Abstract: Using personnel data from a large U.S. retail firm, we examine whether the race or ethnicity of the hiring manager affects the racial composition of new hires. Estimating models with store fixed effects, we find significant effects of manager race and ethnicity. First, all nonblack managers—i.e., whites, Hispanics, and Asians—hire more whites and fewer blacks than do black managers. T...
