Abstract:

Objectives. The aim of this study is to introduce a new way and assign its reliability and validity in measuring the angle of hallux valgus. Methods. In this method, we have proceeded to introduce a simple way for measuring the angle of hallux valgus by using ruler and mathematical formulas. For doing this study, we selected 25students and measured their angle of hallux valgus with new way and by goniometer. To assign the reliability and validity, it has been used of correlation coefficient and ICC coefficient, respectively. Results. Findings show that, there is a significant correlation between new method and using goniometer (r=0/825). Besides, this method is of the high reliability for measuring the angle of hallux valgus (ICC=0/992). Conclusion. The new method not only is both cheap and simple measuring for measuring the angle of hallux valgus, but also have high reliability and validity.

The reliability of a new method for inter-metatarsal angle assessment in hallux valgus surgery

Background The assessment of the intermetatarsal angle associated with hallux valgus has been investigated numerous times within the literature with multiple assessment methods, often producing conflicting results, being presented. The centre of the head method as described by Mitchell in 1958 is a common assessment method however the potential complications associated with post medial eminence...

The reliability of a new method of Intermetatarsal angle assessment in Hallux Abducto Valgus surgery

This research forms the dissertation for an MSc in Podiatry. The Intermetatarsal (IM) angle forms an integral component in the assessment of Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV) surgery. Commonly used to assess the severity of such deformity and guide surgical selection, the degree of accuracy is debatable for both clinical and research purposes. A common fault of previously described IM angle assessmen...

Hallux valgus angle as main predictor for correction of hallux valgus

BACKGROUND It is recognized that different types of hallux valgus exist. Classification occurs with radiographic and clinical parameters. Severity of different parameters is used in algorithms to choose between different surgical procedures. Because there is no consensus about each parameter nor their cut-off point we conducted this study to analyze the influence of these variables on the posto...

Cardan angle rotation sequence effects on first-metatarsophalangeal joint kinematics: implications for measuring hallux valgus deformity

BACKGROUND There currently are no recommended standards for reporting kinematics of the first-metatarsophalangeal joint. This study compared 2 different rotation sequences of Cardan angles, with implications for understanding the measurement of hallux valgus deformity. METHODS Thirty-one women (19 hallux valgus; 12 controls) participated. All were scanned in an open-upright magnetic resonance...

The Effect of Hallux Valgus on Foot Angle during Gait

The Hallux Valgus and the first Metatarsalo Phalangeal joint have a major role during walking. So any condition that would impair the performance of the hallux, can influence the pattern of walking and consequently cause in reduction of efficiency in gait. One of the prevalent phenomenon of foot deformity, especially in females is Hallux valgus (HV) which is usually happened by various reasons ...

Comparing radiological examinations between hallux valgus night brace and a new dynamic orthosis for correction of the hallux valgus

Twenty feet were tested by radiological examination for correction of the hallux valgus. We used a conventional hallux valgus rigid night brace and a newly developed dynamic orthosis (Hallufix). The patients had a light to moderate hallux valgus with a mean angle of 28,8 degree. The results show statistically significant correction of the hallux valgus angle in both orthosis, whereas the new dy...
