Abstract:

Objective It has previously been shown that prenatal maternal administration of Boswellia serrata gum resin (Frankincense) improved learning and memory performance associated with an increase in the size of neuronal bodies in CA3 (Cornu Ammonis) of hippocampus. Continuing the previous work, a morphometric study was designed on CA3 field to examine precisely the effect of prenatal administration of frankincense on the structure of this region. Materials and Methods 2 months-old male Wistar rats whose mothers were given orally the aqueous extract of the Boswellia serrata (0.1 g/kg/day) during gestation (3 weeks) were anesthetized and transcardially perfused with phosphate-buffered solution of 4% formaldehyde and 1% glutaraldehyde (n=8). Each brain was removed and divided into two hemispheres. One hemisphere selected at random for estimating the volumes of CA3 layers, and the other for morphometeric analysis of CA3 neuronal dendrites. The Cavalieri principle employed to estimate the volumes and a quantitative Golgi study used to analyse the dendritic arborizations. Results Comparisons revealed that the control rats had lower volumes than the experimental animals in all layers of CA3 (p

Effect of Boswellia serrata Triana & Planch. gum resin administration during lactation on morphology of pyramidal neurons in hippocampus of rat

Background & Aim: In traditional medicine, Boswellia species gum resin known as Frankincense or Olibanum, has been administrated in elderly for enhancement of memory and also in pregnant women to increase memory and intelligence of progeny. However, it has been rarely scientifically documented so far. We have previously reported that maternal administration of Frankincense during lacta...

Effect of oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata (Kundur) on renal functions in Albino rats

Oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata Roxb. (Burseraceae) locally called ‘Kundur’, is one of the ingredients in certain Unani formulations used in renal diseases. In the present study, the effect of Kundur and its methanol soluble (MS), and methanol insoluble (MINS) fractions were investigated on Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in Albino rats. The renal effects of Kundur and its fractions were ...

A Stereological Study on Hippocampal Subfields Following Administration of Methamphetamine in Male Mice

Background and Aims: This study examined sub-chronic effects of Methamphetamine (METH) on the stereological parameters in the Cornu Ammonis (CA) of the hippocampus in adult mice. Materials and Methods: Fifteen adult male mice, eight weeks old, were randomly divided into three groups: receive saline (controls), or low-dose (LD) 2.5 mg/kg METH, or high-dose (HD) 25 mg/kg METH, via daily intrap...
