A MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO DESCRIBE THE SYNERGISTIC EFFECT BETWEEN SULFAMETHOXAZOLE AND TRIMETHOPRIM

Abstract:
b a s e don folic acid biosynthetic pathway a mathematical model was made for bacterial growth to describe the synergistic effect between sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The results obtained show a strong synergism at growth inhibiting concentrations of these two drugs. Two cyclic pathways included in the model are responsible for this synergism. The roles of these pathways in producing synergism are discussed.

full textSynergistic interaction of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole on Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
The in vitro interaction of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole on clinical isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis was studied. With complete inhibition and a visual endpoint used as the criteria, three of four strains had minimal inhibitory concentrations that indicated resistance to sulfamethoxazole, and all four strains were resistant to trimethoprim. A marked synergism in inhibition was no...
full textSynergistic activity of gentamicin with trimethoprim or sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The effect of combinations of gentamicin with trimethoprim or sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim against clinical isolates of Escherichia coli (11 strains) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (12 strains) was examined by using a microdilution checkerboard technique. All isolates were susceptible to each antimicrobial agent. Synergism, defined as at least a 2-log(2)-dilution lowering of the minimal inhibitory ...
full textTuberculosis and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
The sulfonamides were the first drugs with antituberculous effects. Their use was abandoned and basically forgotten with the advent of streptomycin and isoniazid combination treatment. There is a widespread belief, apparently based on testing a single isolate on questionable media, that Mycobacterium tuberculosis is resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). We saw a complex immunoco...
full textTrimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-associated severe hypoglycaemia: a sulfonylurea-like effect.
AIM To report hypoglycaemia, a life-threatening adverse event, associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A sulfonylurea-like effect, leading to insulin raise, was investigated. METHODS Two cases of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-associated hypoglycaemia in 2 patients with a diagnosis of new HIV-1-infection presenting with Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia are reported. The patients had no p...
full textThe effect of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole on Friend erythroleukemia cells.
Cultures of Friend erythroleukemia cells were subjected to the antibiotics trimethoprim (T) and sulfamethoxazole (S) at levels equal to or below the usual therapeutic range. At T 8 microgram/ml and S 40 microgram/ml, cell growth was arrested, cells appeared megaloblastic, and the examination of cell-cycle distribution by flow microfluorimetry revealed arrest in S phase. With a tenfold reduction...
