Abstract:

Abstract Traditional railway power supply systems impose substantial power quality problems (PQ) on the utility network, such as unbalance, harmonics and a large amount of reactive power. This paper proposes a topology based on three-phase to single-phase modular multilevel converters (MMC) to obviate these problems. The MMC based traction substations (TSS) are connected directly to the utility grid through the three-phase side of MMC. The proposed system symmetrically transfers active power from three-phase grid to the single-phase overhead catenary system (OCS) which compensate negative sequence current (NSC), reactive power and harmonics simultaneously. Eliminating of bulky traction transformers (TT), integrating of OCS, removing the neutral sections and increasing the train speed are the advantages of presenting system. The Precise simulations have been provided simulation have been provided to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Simplified model and submodule capacitor voltage balancing of single-phase AC/AC modular multilevel converter for railway traction purpose

A single-phase AC/AC modular multilevel converter (MMC) can interact directly with 25 kV railway grid without a bulky 50 Hz step-down transformer. This brings in great savings in size and cost. Submodule (SM) voltage balancing of this kind of MMCs remains a major technique issue. This study proposes a voltage-balancing solution for this scenario which consists of intraand inter-arm voltage bala...

Modified Modular Multilevel Converter

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is receiving extensive research interests in high/medium voltage applications due to its modularity, scalability, reliability, high voltage capability and excellent harmonic performance. The submodule capacitors are usually quite bulky since they have to withstand fundamental frequency voltage fluctuations. To reduce the capacitance of these capacitors, th...

Active Power and Current Control for a Modular Multilevel Converter (mmc) Based System

Abstract Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has found very wide application in renewable energy sources, DC power transmission, high voltage applications and micro grid. However the technical challenge of MMC is to maintain constant current, constant power and constant voltage at the output depending on the requirement. In this paper a control loop is developed for maintaining constant power at...
