Abstract:

A comparison of microleakage between two retrograde filling materials (MTA and Amalgam) using dye leakage method Dr. M. Tabrizizadeh* - Dr. K. Rostam Yazdi** *- Assistant Professor of Endodontics Dept. – Faculty of Dentistry – Yazd University of Medical Sciences. **- Dentist. Background and Aim: There is a need for a material with high sealing ability to prevent bacterial and tissue secretions penetration in endodontic surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of amalgam and MTA filling materials. Materials and Methods: Thirty – two single – rooted extracted human teeth were collected. Each tooth was apically resected and retroprepared to 3mm depth. Teeth were divided randomly into two groups of 13 teeth each. First group was retrofilled with amalgam and second group with MTA. All root surfaces, except the ending part, were covered with layers of nail polish. Following immersion in 2% methylene blue for 48 hours, the roots were sectioned and the depth of dye penetration was evaluated by computerized scanning and photoshop software. Results were evaluated by t – test. Results: It was shown that MTA microleakge was significantly less than that of amalgam. The mean dye penetrations of MTA and amalgam were 1.75 mm and 3mm, respectively (pv = 0.0001). Conclusion: The findings of the present study confirm the proper sealing ability of MTA. Key words: Microleakage – Root end – Amalgam – MTA.

A Comparative Investigation of Marginal Adaptation and Surface Defects of MTA and Root MTA as Two Root End Filling Materials

Introduction: This study was carried out to compare two retrograde filling materials entitled mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Root MTA (RMTA) in regard to their marginal adaptation and surface defects. Method: In this study twenty extracted human teeth were used. In all teeth after cleaning and shaping, the root canals were obturated by gutta-percha and root canal sealer. After that in eac...

In-vitro Sealing Ability of Calcium Enriched Mixture Cement Versus Amalgam as Retrograde Filling Materials

Introduction: Sealing ability of a retrograde filling material is an important factor for a successful endodontic apicoectomy. The purpose of this in-vitro study was to compare the sealing ability of calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement versus amalgam as root-end filling materials. Methods: A total of 36 canals of extracted maxillary central incisors were instrumented and obturated using later...

Sealing Ability of Resilon and MTA as Root-end Filling Materials: A Bacterial and Dye Leakage Study

INTRODUCTION Endodontic surgery is a valuable option for maintaining patient's natural dentition when previous orthograde endodontic treatments fail to succeed. Proper root-end preparation and placement of a retro-filling material are recommended for successful endodontic surgery. The objective of this experimental study was to compare sealing ability of Resilon/Epiphany system, as a potential ...

Comparison of Bacterial and Dye Microleakage of Different Root-End Filling Materials

INTRODUCTION The provision of an effective apical seal is an essential factor when choosing an appropriate material for success of root-end surgeries. Root-end resection, preparation and obturation should provide an adequate apical seal. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate bacterial and dye microleakage of four different root-end filling materials and compare the efficacy of these...
