A Comparison Between the Effects of Xylazine-Ketamine and Xylazine-Thiopental Combinations on Cardiac Rhythm in Dogs
Authors
Abstract:
Objective- To compare the effects of xylazine-ketamine and xylazine-thiopental on cardiac rhythm indogs.Design- Experimental study.Animals- 15 mixed-bred, adult dogs of either sex.Procedures- Following premedication with xylazine HCI, either ketarnine HCI or sodium thiopentalwere administered to dogs. Cardiac rhythm was evaluated before as well as 15,30,45, and 60 minutes and3 days after induction of anesthesia.Results- Sinus arrestlblock and first degree atrioventricular (A-V) block were the most commonarrhythmias observed after ketaminc administration. During thiopental-induced anesthesia, ventricularpremature beats with bigeminy pattern and sinus bradycardia were also recorded. Conclusion and Clinical Relevance-Concerning the documented effects of the aforementioned drugson cardiac rhythm, arrhythmias might be induced by the combination of xylazine with both anestheticdrugs.

Comparison of the effects of different doses of acepromazine-xylazine on the electrocardiogram in dogs
Seventy seven adult large mixed breed dogs of either sex were included in this study. The animals were randomly divided into four groups and received the following drug combinations intramuscularly: Group 1 xylazine (0.5 mg/kg) and acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg), Group 2 xylazine (0.8 mg/kg) and acepromazine (0.03 mg/kg), Group 3 xylazine (0.3 mg/kg) and acepromazine (0.08 mg/kg) and Group 4 xylazin...
full textComparison of thiopental and ketamine+xylazine anesthesia in ischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias in rats.
BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate the influence of thiopental (85 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (ip)), and ketamine+xylazine (ketamine 75 mg/kg and xylazine 8 mg/kg, ip) anesthesia on the incidence and duration of ischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias. MATERIALS AND METHODS Myocardial ischemia was induced by a 6-min ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery, followed by a 6-min reper...

Objective- Evaulation of analgesic and sedative characteristics of xylazine/ketaminecombination for caudal epidural analgesia in comparison with two routine agents in donkey.Design- Cross over study.Animals- Five healthy adult donkeys of both sexes with body weights ranging from 150-200 kg.Procedures- Three treatments [lidocaine HCl 2% (0.22 mg kg^-1), xylazine HCl 2% (0.17 mg kg^-1) and xylazi...
full textThe Effects of Xylazine-Ketamine Anesthesia on Intraocular Pressure in Dogs
Glaucoma is defined as the increase in the intraocular pressure (IOP) causing visual loss due to the circulation deficits of the aqueous humor. The IOP measurement can be obtained without any problem in calm animals. However, some animals do not allow IOP measurement without sedation or anesthesia. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of xylazine HCl (as a sedative) and ketamine...
full textIncreasing ketamine dose enhances the anaesthetic properties of ketamine-xylazine-midazolam combinations in growing pigs.
The influence of increasing the dosage of ketamine on anaesthesia induced by a combination of ketamine, xylazine and midazolam in pigs was determined by assessing the onset of action (OAN), duration of analgesia (DAN), anaesthesia time (ANT), and recovery time (RCT) in 10 growing pigs (Mean weight: 18.2 +/- 1.65 kg) receiving either 10 mg/kg intramuscular (i.m.) injection of 10% ketamine, 2 mg/...
full textComparison of ketamine-diazepam with ketamine-xylazine anesthetic combinations in sheep spontaneously breathing and undergoing maxillofacial surgery.
The objective of this study was to choose a suitable anesthetic combination for use in experimental surgical models by comparing the anesthetic and cardio-respiratory changes. Fourteen healthy male sheep were randomly assigned to two different drug regimens. In Group 1 the sheep were anesthetized with ketamine + xylazine (22 mg/kg im. + 0.2 mg/kg i.m., respectively). Anesthetic combination of k...
