Abstract:

Introduction: This study aimed to compare operation time, intraoperative bleeding and postoperative pain between cold dissection tonsillectomy and harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy.  Materials and Methods: In this single-blinded clinical trial, 32 patients aged 14–48 were enrolled. Each patient randomly underwent tonsillectomy using the harmonic scalpel on one side and cold dissection on the other side. Operation time and bleeding volume were measured during surgery. The pain intensity level on each side was recorded on the first and seventh postoperative days.  Results: The mean volume of intraoperative bleeding was 9.59 ml on the harmonic side and 74.38 ml on the cold dissection side; which represents a significantly lower amount on the harmonic side (P

Harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy versus hot electrocautery and cold dissection: an objective comparison.

We conducted a large-scale retrospective study to compare the surgical efficacy, practical utility, safety, and costeffectiveness of ultrasonic harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy, hot electrocautery, and cold surgical dissection. We based our findings on the length of operating time, complication rates, the length of hospital stay for patients with complications, and relative costs. We then compare...

Post-Operative Pain in Tonsillectomy with the Harmonic Scalpel

Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures for otolaryngologists. Although tonsillectomy procedures are common, like any surgical procedure, there are post-operative complaints and complications. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the pattern of post-operative pain in tonsillectomy using the harmonic scalpel (HS). 43 patients were entered into this study (13 me...

Harmonic scalpel versus conventional tonsillectomy: a double-blind clinical trial.

We conducted a prospective, double-blind clinical trial to evaluate the differences in operating time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative pain at 3 hours and 1 week, and delayed (>24 hr) bleeding associated with ultrasonic harmonic scalpel tonsillectomy and conventional tonsillectomy. The study was carried out on 28 patients with recurrent tonsillitis and/or adenotonsillar hypertrophy who...

[Coblation tonsillectomy versus blunt dissection tonsillectomy].

OBJECTIVE Compare coblation tonsillectomy with blunt dissection tonsillectomy to see if there is any difference in intraoperative bleeding, operating time, postoperative pain, tonsillar fossae healing and return to normal diet and activities. METHOD A randomised control trial was carried out to compare coblation tonsillectomy with blunt dissection tonsillectomy in 56 patients. The same surgeo...

Postoperative Pain After Tonsillectomy; Comparison Between CO2 Laser Versus Conventional Dissection Tonsillectomy

Background: Postoperative pain after tonsillectomy is a great problem that the ideal tonsillectomy operation should have little or no morbidity or mortality with excellent outcome. Aim of the study:To compare the outcome of postoperative pain with two different methods of tonsillectomy, conventional dissection Tonsillectomy versus CO2 laser assisted tonsillectomy procedure. Method: Randomized c...
