Abstract:

OCP Effects in Telugu

The antiantigemination phenomenon in Telugu is a case study of the relationship of the role of the OCP in lexical phonology, formal post-lexical phonology and phonetics. In this paper a number of different experimental findings relating to the OCP in various compartments of the grammar – the lexicon, the phonological component and the phonetic component – that seem like unrelated phenomena are ...

The Ocp in Functional Phonology

Though seemingly a good candidate for a universal output-oriented constraint, the OCP does not occur as a constraint in the production grammar. Instead, it handles, in interaction with the NoCrossing Constraint, the correspondence between acoustic cues and perceptual feature values in the perception grammar. Because faithfulness constraints use the perception grammar to evaluate the similarity ...

Similarity Avoidance and the Ocp

It has long been known that verbal roots containing homorganic consonant pairs are rare in Arabic, motivating the existence of an OCP-Place constraint (Obligatory Contour Principle on place of articulation) in the phonological grammar. We explore this constraint using an on-line lexicon of Arabic roots. The strength of the constraint is quantified by the ratio of the observed number of examples...

The Gradient OCP − Tonal Evidence from Swedish

The OCP, which is exhibited at various levels of the phonological representation (e.g. featural, melodic, and tonal), has been extensively discussed in numerous studies (Leben 1973, 1978, 1980; McCarthy 1979, 1986; Archangeli 1986; Odden 1986, 1988, 1994; Archangeli & Pulleyblank 1987; Hyman 1987; Kenstowicz & Kidda 1987; Myers 1987, 1997ab; Yip 1988; Hewitt & Prince 1989; Myers & Carleton 1996...

Tigrinya Root Consonants and the OCP

ing away from the reduplicated part of the stem, these verbs are derived from triliterals such as /¿rm/, and are assimilable to the large class of triliteral roots more typically realized as in (6). Only one root, identified by Bassano as belonging to the Hamasen dialect, is treated in this analysis as a true quinquiliteral (cf. also (37) below). It is also unique among five-slot templates in t...
