Abstract:

Cartesian Mechanisms

If we follow a traditional reading of Descartes and throw in some of our favorite German philosophers (Kant, Husserl and Heidegger, for instance) we can isolate a doctrinal current that says that the pure intellect has no immediate access to the extra-mental world. This reduction of experience to reason forces the question of the external world’s existence, leading to Heidegger’s assertion that...

Cartesian Monoids

The Cartesian monoid of partial piecewise shift operators is developed as a model for programming systems such as Backus’ FP. Special attention is paid to those elements which are equationally implicitly definable.

Cartesian beams.

A new and very general beam solution of the paraxial wave equation in Cartesian coordinates is presented. We call such a field a Cartesian beam. The complex amplitude of the Cartesian beams is described by either the parabolic cylinder functions or the confluent hypergeometric functions, and the beams are characterized by three parameters that are complex in the most general situation. The prop...

Cartesian Sensations

Descartes maintained that sensations of color and the like misrepresent the material world in normal circumstances. Some prominent scholars have argued that, to explain this Cartesian view, we must attribute to Descartes a causal account of sensory representation. I contend that neither the arguments motivating this reading nor the textual evidence offered in its support is sufficient to justif...

Biologically inspired Cartesian and non-Cartesian filters for attentional sequences

The aim of this paper is to develop a rich set of visual primitives that can be used by a camera-endowed robot as it is exploring a scene and thus generating an attentional sequence––spatio-temporally related sets of visual features. Our starting point is inspired by the work of Gallant et al. on the area V4 response of the macaque monkeys to Cartesian and non-Cartesian stimuli. The novelty of ...

Homogeneous cartesian products

A graph G is 1-homogeneous if certain isomorphisms between similarly embedded induced subgraphs of G extend to automorphisms of G. We show that the only connected composite 1-homogeneous graphs are the cube, and Kn ×K2 and Kn ×Kn with n ≥ 2.
