Authors
Abstract:

Morphological re-evaluation of the parotoid glands of Bufo ictericus (Amphibia, Anura, Bufonidae)
Multicellular glands in the amphibian integument represent a signifi cant evolutionary advance over those of fi shes. Bufonids have parotoid glands, symmetrically disposed in a post-orbital position. Their secretion may contribute to protection against predators and parasites. This study provides a re-evaluation of the morphology of the Bufo ictericus parotoid glands. The parotoid gland integum...

Geographic Region The natural range of giant marine toad native to Central and South America, from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas south to the Central Amazon and southeastern Peru [2] [3]. However, it has been introduced and is considered invasive throughout much of Oceania and the Caribbean, as well as Australia [2]. It’s now found in the Caribbean Islands, South Florida (Key West and Stock is...
full textAcanthocephalus bufonis (Acanthocephala) from Bufo marinus (Bufonidae: Amphibia) in Hawaii.
During a survey of the helminth parasites of the introduced toad, Bufo marinus, on O'ahu, Hawaii, an acanthocephalan corresponding to Acanthocephalus bufonis (Shipley, 1903) was found in the intestinal tract. This is a new host and locality record for A. bufonis which has only previously been recorded from amphibians in the Orient. Possible mechanisms for the introduction of A. bufonis to Hawai...
full textSperm concentration and fertilization rate in Bufo arenarum (Amphibia: Anura).
The influence of sperm concentration upon the fertilization rate of Bufo arenarum oocytes was determinated. The experimental results were analysed according to the theories of Rothschild and Swann, and Hultin and Hagström for Psammechinus miliaris. The experimental results agreed with the predictions of the latter theory. Since Bufo arenarum and Psammechinus miliaris oocytes differ in both size...
full textEvidence of convergent character displacement in release vocalizations of Bufo fowleri and Bufo terrestris (Anura; Bufonidae)
Anuran release vocalizations prevent prolonged amplexus of males by conspecific and heterospecific males, whereas advertisement vocalizations potentially act as a premating isolation mechanism. Selection favouring prompt release during heterospecific amplexus should result in convergent character displacement in release vocalizations. Conversely, selection should produce divergent character dis...
full textInvestigating opposing patterns of character displacement in release and advertisement vocalizations of Bufo fowleri and Bufo americanus (Anura; Bufonidae)
Anuran release vocalizations function to prevent prolonged amplexus between males, whereas advertisement vocalizations potentially act as a premating isolation mechanism. To facilitate rapid release during heterospecific amplexus, selection should favor convergent character displacement in release vocalizations. Conversely, to promote isolation between sympatric congeners, selection should favo...
