Abstract:

A Kantian ethics approach to moral bioenhancement

It seems, at first glance, that a Kantian ethics approach to moral enhancement would tend towards the position that there could be no place for emotional modulation in any understanding of the endeavour, owing to the typically understood view that Kantian ethics does not allow any role for emotion in morality as a whole. It seems then that any account of moral bioenhancement which places emotio...

In contrast to dominant theories that focus on top-down, deliberative reas...

A Pluralistic Approach to Attachment

This chapter presents an alternative view to classic attachment theory and research, arguing for systematic, ethnographically informed, approaches to the study of child development. It begins with the observation that the attachment relationships children develop are locally determined and insists that these features of attachment can only be captured through observing, talking with, and listen...

A virtue ethics approach to moral dilemmas in medicine.

Most moral dilemmas in medicine are analysed using the four principles with some consideration of consequentialism but these frameworks have limitations. It is not always clear how to judge which consequences are best. When principles conflict it is not always easy to decide which should dominate. They also do not take account of the importance of the emotional element of human experience. Virt...

Is Moral Theory Useful in Practical Ethics?

Many applied or practical ethicists hold that ethical theories have little value in practical ethics. The theories such critics have in mind are probably most often utilitarianism and a Kantian ethics of respect for persons, which I shall refer to as RP theory. This criticism applies to both practical ethics done in the classroom and in other venues, such as professional publication. The critic...
