abstract

background: resistant strains of pseudomonas aeruginosa to imipenem was medical treatment problem, especiallyin burnt units of hospitals. objectives: this study was conducted to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of fe2o3 nanoparticles alone and functionalized with imipenem on p. aeruginosa starins producing metallo b-lactamases (mbl).materials and methods: a disk diffusion method was used to isolate a clinical p. aeruginosa producing metallo b-lactamases with imipenem resistance. the minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) of fe2o3 nanoparticles and imipenem were calculated against the bacteria. the antimicrobial effect of nanoparticles functionalized with the antibiotic was determined. standard strain of p. aeruginosa atcc: 27853 was used as control.results: the clinical sample was resistant to imipenem (up to 28 mg.ml-1). similarly, mic of the nanoparticles against the isolate was 160 mg.ml-1. subsequently, the combination of 16 pg.ml-1 of antibiotic with 80 mg.ml-1 of fe2o3 nanoparticles were able to inhibit the growth of the isolate.conclusions: fe2o3 nanoparticles functionalized with imipenem can impair antibiotic resistance mechanisms of bacteria as it can make the imipenem resistant the aforementioned bacterium more susceptible to weaker concentrations of antibiotic. it also has its own antibacterial effect in certain concentrations.

Detection of Metallo-β-Lactamases (MBLs) Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates in Tehran Hospitals, Iran

Introduction: The strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa are known as an opportunistic pathogen that can cause infections in humans and animals. Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) are the most significant factors of resistance to carbapenem antibiotics in these bacteria. This study was designed to identify the MBLs producing P. aeruginosa isolates in three hospitals of Tehran, Iran. Methods: Tota...

Prevalence of Metallo-β-lactamases in Imipenem-non- susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii

Background: Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) have been reported in gram negative bacilli and are becoming increasingly important clinically because the enzymes hydrolyse almost all β-lactams, including carbapenems. Thus, the present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of MBL types in imipenem-nonsusceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from a tertiary teach...

Identification and Characterization of Metallo-β-Lactamases Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa Clinical Isolates in University Hospital from Zanjan Province, Iran

Background: Infectious by Pseudomonas aeruginosa has spread worldwide and metallo-beta-lactamases (MBL) are being reported with increasing frequency. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility and distribution of blaVIM and blaIMP genes in P. aeruginosa isolates from Zanjan Province of Iran. Methods: A total of 70 P. aeruginosa isolates were identified from patients ...

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Metallo-β-Lactamase-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Metallo-β-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MPPA) is an important nosocomial pathogen that shows resistance to all β-lactam antibiotics except monobactams. There are various types of metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa including Imipenemase (IMP), Verona integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase (VIM), Sao Paulo metallo-β-lactamase (SPM), Germany imipenemase (...

Characteristics of Metallo-β-Lactamase-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Korea

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular epidemiological characteristics of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three hundred and twenty nine P. aeruginosa clinical isolates were collected from 23 general hospitals in Korea from March to June 2014. Species were identified by matrix-assited laser ...
