abstract

background: this study was aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy and feasibility of cone beam computed tomography (cbct) with phosphor storage plate (psp) in detection of simulated occlusal secondary caries. materials and methods: in this in vitro descriptive-comparative study, a total of 80 slots of class i cavities were prepared on 80 extracted human premolars. then, 40 teeth were randomly selected out of this sample and artifi cial carious lesions were created on these teeth by a round diamond bur no. 1/2. all 80 teeth were restored with amalgam fi llings and radiographs were taken, both with psp system and cbct. all images were evaluated by three calibrated observers. the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to compare the diagnostic accuracy of two systems. spss (spss inc., chicago, il, usa) was adopted for statistical analysis. the difference between az value of bitewing and cbct methods were compared by pairwise comparison method. the inter- and intra-operator agreement was assessed by kappa analysis ( p < 0.05). results: the mean az value for bitewings and cbct was 0.903 and 0.994, respectively. signifi cant differences were found between psp and cbct ( p = 0.010). the kappa value for inter-observer agreement was 0.68 and 0.76 for psp and cbct, respectively. the kappa value for intra-observer agreement was 0.698 (observer 1, p = 0.000), 0.766 (observer 2, p = 0.000) and 0.716 (observer 3, p = 0.000) in psp method, and 0.816 (observer 1, p = 0.000), 0.653 (observer 2, p = 0.000) and 0.744 (observer 3, p = 0.000) in cbct method. conclusion: this in vitro study, with a limited number of samples, showed that the new tom vgi flex cbct system was more accurate than the psp in detecting the simulated small secondary occlusal caries under amalgam restoration. key words: cone-beam computed tomography, dental caries, dental radiograph, digital radiograph

Comparison of Cone Beam Computerized Tomography and Phosphor Storage Plate in Detecting Artificial Buccal Recurrent Caries

Introduction Recurrent or secondary caries develops at the margin of restorations and causes restorative failure. We conducted this study to compare the performance of Phosphor Storage Plate (PSP) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan in detecting buccal recurrent caries under amalgam and composite resin restorations. Materials and Methods Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal...

Diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography in detecting secondary caries under composite fillings: an in vitro study

PURPOSE The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the diagnostic performance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the detection of secondary carious lesions under composite resin fillings applied to different types of cavities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Occlusal cavities (O) (n=18), occlusal cavities with mesial or distal component (MO/DO) (n=30), and mesial-occlusal-distal cavities (MOD...

A Comparative Study of Diagnostic Accuracy of Cone Beam Computed Tomography and Intra Oral Digital Radiography Phosphor Storage Plates in Detecting Strip Perforation in Endodontically-Treated Teeth

Background and purpose: Perforation impairs the prognosis of endodontic treatments, so, timely and accurate diagnosis is important. For this purpose, various radiographic diagnostic tools have been studied to select the method that has the least complications and helps in making the most accurate diagnosis. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and int...

Diagnostic accuracy of Cone Beam Computed Tomography, conventional and digital radiographs in detecting interproximal caries

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Presently, various imaging methods are available for the disclosure of proximal caries. Some recent studies have attempted to determine the diagnostic accuracy of available modalities, but they have shown variable results. Aim: This study was carried out to recognize and examine the correctness of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), regular radiographs and the nondire...

Diagnostic performance of cone-beam computed tomography on detection of mechanically-created artificial secondary caries

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and bitewing images in detection of secondary caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and twenty proximal slots of Class II cavities were randomly prepared on human premolar and molar teeth, and restored with amalgam (n=60) and composite resin (n=60). Then, artificial secondar...

Comparison of simulated cone beam computed tomography to conventional helical computed tomography for imaging of rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has emerged as a low radiation dose alternative to traditional computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the paranasal sinuses. The purpose of our study was to determine how often clinically important findings would be missed if CBCT was used routinely for sinus imaging. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review. METHODS We evaluated all maxillo...
