Genetic Susceptibility to Transient and Permanent Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus
Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a rare kind of diabetes characterized by hyperglycemia and low levels of insulin. Clinically, it is categorized into two main types: transient NDM (TNDM) and permanent NDM (PNDM). These types are diagnosed based on duration of insulin dependence early in the disease. In TNDM, diabetes begins in the first few weeks of life with remission in a few months. Howev...
full textTransient neonatal diabetes, a disorder of imprinting.
Transient neonatal diabetes (TND) is a rare but distinct type of diabetes. Classically, neonates present with growth retardation and diabetes in the first week of life. Apparent remission occurs by 3 months but there is a tendency for children to develop diabetes in later life. Evidence suggests it is the result of overexpression of an imprinted and paternally expressed gene/s within the TND cr...
full textChromosomal Region Implicated in Transient Neonatal Diabetes
Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM) is estimated to occur in ~1 in 500,000 births and represents 50–60% of cases of neonatal diabetes. The pattern of inheritance of TNDM and its association with chromosome 6 uniparental disomy is consistent with the presence on chromosome 6 of an imprinted gene involved in pancreatic -cell development. Systematic screening for chromosome 6 abnormalities...

fanconi- bickel syndrome (fbs) is a rare type of glycogen storage disease (gsd) characterized by hepatomegaly, proximal renal tubular acidosis (rta) and marked growth retardation. we report a case of fbs presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis and transient neonatal diabetes. a female infant, product of consanguineous marriage presented with diabetic ketoacidosis at age 33 days, and was treated a...

full textPaternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 6 causes transient neonatal diabetes.
We report an infant with intrauterine growth retardation and transient neonatal diabetes who has paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 6. The infant was not dysmorphic and had no congenital anomalies. To our knowledge, this is the third case of paternal uniparental disomy occurring in an infant with transient neonatal diabetes, thus confirming the association.
