abstract

background : since the use of high concentrations of oxygen in infants may lead to chronic lung problems, using proper methods of care in infants under mechanical ventilation is one of the most important measures in nicu. this study aimed to investigate the effects of prone and supine positions on oxygenation (spo 2 ) in premature infants under mechanical ventilation and comparing infants’ oxygenation in the two positions. methods : in across over non randomized clinical trial study, 32 preterm infants under mechanical ventilation who had inclusion criteria were enrolled in simple convenient method. firstly, they were placed in supine position for 120 minutes and further in prone position for 120 minutes .their spo 2 were monitored by pulse oximeter continuously and was recorded every minute. data analysis was done using software spss 15 by anova test and post hoc test. results : the data showed that during 120 minutes of exposure of infants in each position there were no significant changes in spo 2 . in addition, the spo 2 levels in the prone position were significantly higher than the spo 2 levels in the supine position from 15 th minute to 120 th minute (to the end). conclusions : neonatal positioning in prone position is a simple, non-invasive, and free of charge method that could lead to improve oxygenation in infants undergoing mechanical ventilation. key words : neonate, respiratory distress, mechanical ventilation, oxygenated hemoglobin, supine position, prone position.

The effects of supine and prone positions on oxygenation in premature infants undergoing mechanical ventilation

BACKGROUND Since the use of high concentrations of oxygen in infants may lead to chronic lung problems, using proper methods of care in infants under mechanical ventilation is one of the most important measures in NICU. This study aimed to investigate the effects of prone and supine positions on oxygenation (SPO(2)) in premature infants under mechanical ventilation and comparing infants' oxygen...

Investigation of oxygenation in premature infants under mechanical ventilation in supine position compare to side lying

Abstract Introduction: Changing position is an important aspect within nursing care. Prone positioning amongst premature infants could improve their oxygenation compared to supine position. Side lying position leads to developed support between premature infants, however there is few studies about effects of this position on premature infants 'oxygenation. Objective: This study was conduc...

Comparison of the Effects of Supine and Prone Positions on Oxygen Saturation and Vital Signs in Premature Infants: A Crossover Clinical Trial

Background: Positioning of premature newborns significantly affects their health status. However, the most suitable position remains controversial. The current study aimed to compare the effect of supine and prone positions on oxygen saturation and vital signs in premature newborns. Methods: In this crossover clinical trial, a total of 22 new...

Comparison of the Effects of Prone and Supine Positions on Abdominal Distention in the Premature Infants Receiving Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP)

Background: Premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) are in dire need of respiratory support with a ventilator. However, the high tidal volume of mechanical ventilation may cause lung injury, and researchers have been concerned with the use of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP). NCPAP has concomitant side effects, such as abdominal distention, which might disrup...

Effects of prone and supine positions on sleep state and stress responses in preterm infants.

AIM The purpose of the study is to assess the influence of prone or supine position on sleep states and on withdrawal and approach reactions of preterm infants. METHODS Thirty-two preterm infants from Meir Medical Center, Israel, mean post menstrual age 30.37±2.57, mean birth weight 1250g±313.86, participated in the study. Infants were studied during 48h. Positions (prone and supine) were alt...

تأثیر وضعیت دمر بر اکسیژناسیون بیماران تحت تهویه مکانیکی

Background & Aim: One of the nurses' roles in patient care is frequent position change in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation. Because of attaching many lines and tubes to these patients, they are in supine or lateral positions most of the time. Nurses prefer these positions due to making care simple. Many studies have shown that prone position has positive effects on oxygenation and ven...
