abstract

objective(s) portulaca oleracea l. is a herbaceous weed from portulacaceae family. it can be found in many parts of the world. modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that p. oleracea have antioxidant effects. the protective effect of aqueous and ethanolic extract of p. oleracea against cisplatin-induced renal toxicity was studied in rats. materials and methods single intraperitoneal injection of 4 mg/kg cisplatin was administrated to rats. after 5 days, blood urea nitrogen (bun) and serum creatinine (scr) concentration were determined. effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts, before and after cisplatin injection on bun and scr, as well as morphological renal damage, was evaluated. results it was indicated that treatment with aqueous and ethanolic extracts of p. oleracea in the highest dose (0.8 and 2 g/ kg), 6 and 12 hr before cisplatin injection reduced bun and scr. tubular necrotic damage was not observed either. conclusion results suggest that p. oleracea extract may protect against cisplatin-induced renal toxicity and might serve as a novel combination agent with cisplan to limit renal injury.

Protective Effect of P-Coumaric Acid against Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Background and purpose: Cisplatin is used in chemotherapy for cancer patients. But, it has adverse effects on some organs, including the kidney and liver. P-coumaric acid is a polyphenolic substance with multiple biological properties. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of p-coumaric acid on renal and hepatic side effects of cisplatin. Materials and methods: This experimental st...

The protective effect of Nigella sativa against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats

Objective: The clinical use of cisplatin is highly restricted, because of its nephrotoxicity. In this study the protective effect of Nigella sativa (N. sativa) against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity was investigated in rats. Materials and Methods: In the current study, the effects of the administration of aqueous-ethanolic extract of N. sativa (100 and 200 mg/kg, BW) and vitamin E (100 mg/kg, ...

Neuroprotective effect of Portulaca oleracea extracts against 6-hydroxydopamine-induced lesion of dopaminergic neurons.

The Portulaca oleracea L. (Portulacaceae) is a cosmopolitan species with a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant and neuroprotective actions. We investigated the effects of P. oleracea extracts in a 6-hydroxydopamine rat model of Parkinson's disease, a debilitating disorder without effective treatments. Chemical profiles of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of whole plant were...

Protective effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Nigella sativa L. and Portulaca oleracea L. on free radical induced hemolysis of RBCs

BACKGROUND AND THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY It has been shown that Nigella sativa L. and Portulaca oleracea L. have many antioxidant components. In the present study, the cytoprotective effect of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of N.sativa and P.oleracea against hemolytic damages induced by free radical initiator, AAPH [2, 2' azobis (2- amidinopropane) hydrochloride] was evaluated. METHODS Hemolys...

Reno-protective effect of Rheum turkestanicum against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity

Objective(s): Gentamicin belongs to the family of aminoglycoside antibiotics and is a preferred drug in developing countries because of its low cost, availability, and potent effects against bacterial. However, gentamicin can induce nephrotoxicity. In this research, hydroalcoholic extract of Rheum turkestanicum was used against gentamicin- induced nephrotoxicity. Rheum turkestanicum is used aga...
