genetic relationship and the possibility of inter species breeding between domestic sheep (ovis aries) and wild sheep (ovis orientalis isphahanica)

abstract

introduction: cloning an individual by transferring somatic nuclei into enucleated recipient oocytes has already been well established. this technology also offers new opportunities to restore threatened species with interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer (scnt). however, few mammalian species have been studied for their reproductive biology whereas huge differences have been observed between these species. this study evaluated the similarities and genetical relationship of germ lines and the reproductive biology between domestic (ovis aries) and threatened wild sheep (ovis orientalis isphahanica). material and methods: six populations of wild and domestic sheep were sampled and analyzed for chromosome number, interbreeding capability and fecundity. resulted hybrids (male or female) were investigated for survival, karyotyping and fertility. results: both the domestic and wild sheep uniformly exhibited a 2n of 54 and were able to crossbreed and induce sustainable pregnancy into the counterpart species. the resultant hybrids (male or female) which were produced by either wild ram × domestic ewe or domestic ram × wild ewe had identical chromosome number (2n=54). normal genital apparatuses and fertile conditions were observed in both types of adult hybrids. conclusion: the results indicated a very close generational relationship between the wild and domestic sheep species and also the possibility of domestic species to be used as an abundant genetic background for saving endangered wild sheep via scnt.

Molecular cloning, characterization and in vitro expression of SERPIN B1 of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) and domestic sheep (Ovis aries), and comparison with that of other species.

Mannheimia haemolytica infection results in enhanced PMN-mediated tissue damage in the lungs of bighorn sheep (BHS) compared to that of domestic sheep (DS). SERPIN B1 is an inhibitor of PMN-derived serine proteases. It prevents lung tissue injury by inhibiting the serine proteases released as a result of PMN lysis and degranulation. It is conceivable that PMNs of BHS exhibit decreased quantity ...

A phylogenetic comparison of wild sheep (Ovis musimon) and domestic sheep (Ovis aries )represented by BCP synthetic line using mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence analysis

Based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b (cyt b) gene was partially sequenced and analysed in order to investigate genetic diversity between domestic sheep (Ovis aries) synthetic line BCP n=16 and wild sheep mouflon (Ovis musimon) n=24 from the Sowie Mountains in Poland. All 18 haplotypes were observed which formed two distinct clades in O. aries BCP synthetic line and three clades in mo...

Exclusion Performance in Dwarf Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) and Sheep (Ovis orientalis aries)

Using a comparative approach, we investigated the ability of dwarf goats and sheep to use direct and indirect information about the location of a food reward in an object-choice task. Subjects had to choose between two cups with only one covering a reward. Before making a choice, subjects received information about the baited (direct information) or non-baited cup (indirect information). Both g...

Nocturnal variation of prolactin secretion in the Mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) and domestic sheep (Ovis aries): seasonal changes.

Seasonal changes in nocturnal prolactin secretion and their relationship with melatonin secretion were monitored in wild (Mouflon, Ovis gmelini musimon) and domesticated sheep (breed Manchega, Ovis aries). Two groups of eleven adult females each, were maintained outdoors under natural photoperiod. Plasma concentrations of prolactin and melatonin were determined during the summer and winter sols...

Morphology of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) of Sheep (Ovis aries)

The detailed anatomy of TMJ of sheep was explored so that it could be used as an experimental animal for study of condylar growth. The experimental animal was a 3-month-old sheep, head of which was procured from a local abettor. The results showed that the sheep is an excellent experimental model for the study of condylar growth, with and without the use of functional appliances, because of sim...

Histochemical Studies On the Peyer’s Patches of Sheep (Ovis aries)

Tissue pieces of jejunum and ileum from different prenatal and postnatal age groups of sheep were collected from Corporation slaughter house, Perambur, Chennai. The goblet cells in the villous epithelium were positive for Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) but the negative reaction was observed in the follicle-associated epithelium as the goblet cells were absent. The follicleassociated epithelium show...
