antibacterial activity of iranian green and black tea on streptococcus mutans : an in vitro study
Authors
abstract
objective: dental caries is a common infectious disease. streptococcus mutans is the prevalent decay microorganism. the anti streptococcus mutans activity of non fermented and semi-fermented tea has been shown. the aim of this study was to determine the anti streptococcus mutans activity of iranian green and black tea (non fermented and fermented type). materials and methods: the study was experimental. the aerial parts of wild-growing camellia sinensis were collected from lahijan province. the methanolic extract of green and black tea were examined on streptococcus mutans (atcc3566). five different concentrations (50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 200mg/ml, 300mg/ml and 400 mg/ml) of tea extracts were tested using the well assay method. the agar dilution method recommended by the nccls standards (national committee for clinical laboratory standards) was used. the minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) was determined as the lowest concentration of extract inhibiting visible growth of the organism on the agar media plate. minimum bactericidal concentration (mbc) was detected from mic. results: the iranian green and black tea had an antibacterial effect on 100 to 400 mg/ml concentrations. the minimum inhibitory concentration of green and black tea was 150 and 50 mg/ml, respectively. the mean diameter of inhibition zone were 9.5 mm and 10.9 mm for methanolic extract of green and black tea, respectively. conclusion: both iranian non fermented (green tea) and fermented (black tea) have anti streptococcus mutans activity in vitro. the anti streptococcus mutans activity of black tea appears on a lower concentration than green tea.

full textAntimicrobial Effect of Kids Dentifrices on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus: An In-Vitro Study
Background and purpose: Dental caries is one of the most common bacterial diseases in childhood. Using proper dentifrice is suggested to reduce the incidence of this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effects of different brands of children's dentifrice available in Iran’s market on Streptococcus mutans (PTCC1683) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (PTCC4356) strains...
full textAn In-Vitro Study of the Antibacterial Efficacy of Cavity Liners Against Streptococcus Mutans and Lactobacillus Casei
Background and aim: The main factor that influences the durability of dental restorations is secondary caries. Antibacterial activity of dental materials is important from the clinical aspect, as it might inhibit recurrent caries. The aim of the present study was to compare the antibacterial activity of four fluoride-releasing dental cavity liners against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and La...
full textEvaluation of antibacterial activity of Achyranthes aspera extract against Streptococcus mutans: An in vitro study
Dental caries and periodontal diseases have historically been considered the most important global oral health burdens. Many chemicals and synthetic drugs have marked the side effects. Hence, there has been a paradigm shift from the use of modern drugs to the age-old herbs. Achyranthes aspera is one such important plant with various established pharmaceutical properties. The aim of this study w...

Background: Identifying the best species of medicinal plants and extracting effective substances can be effective in preventing oral and dental illness. The Malva sylvestris L. is among these plants. Malva sylvestris L. belongs to Malvaceae family from which A great deal of (Malvone A: 2-methyl-3-methoxy-5,6-di- hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) anthocyanin and important natural pigments have been ex...
full textEffect of different types of tea on Streptococcus mutans: an in vitro study.
CONTEXT If tea can be shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans there can be a basis for using it as an agent for reducing caries. AIMS The aim of the study was to determine the effect of aqueous and organic extracts of three types of tea (green, oolong, and black tea) on the growth of S. mutans. SETTINGS AND DESIGN In vitro study. MATERIAL AND METHODS Quali...
