extracting the intensity - duration – frequency curves with daily precipitation data using fractal theory

Authors
abstract

the intensity – duration – frequency (idf) curves play most important role in the hydraulic design of structures. the traditional method to construct idf curves has a long estimation process and also has high number of parameters which this property reduces the reliability of idf curves. in the traditional method, rainfall in different durations should be available until the extraction of idf curves are be possible. whereas in many regions only 24-hour precipitation statistics are available which with this data the extraction of idf curves using common methods are not possible. in this paper, fractal theory has been used to remove these problems and idf curves are made with maximum annual daily rainfall data. the applied method in comparison with conventional method is less computational steps and its number of parameters is much lower that this property increases the reliability of idf curves. fractal and traditional methods were used to extract the idf curves at tangheie panj rainfall station and the results shown that a fractal method with daily precipitation data clearly able to extract the idf curves.

Construction of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves for precipitation with annual maxima data in Rwanda, Central Africa

Detailed probabilistic information on the intensity of precipitation in Central Africa is highly needed in order to cope with the risk analysis of natural hazards. In the mountainous areas of Rwanda land slides frequently occur and might cause a heavy toll in human lives. The establishment of Intensity-Duration-Frequency curves for precipitation in Central Africa remains a difficult task as ade...

Nonstationary Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency Curves for Infrastructure Design in a Changing Climate

Extreme climatic events are growing more severe and frequent, calling into question how prepared our infrastructure is to deal with these changes. Current infrastructure design is primarily based on precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves with the so-called stationary assumption, meaning extremes will not vary significantly over time. However, climate change is expected to alter...

Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Frequency Functions for the Bannu Region NWFP Pakistan (RESEARCH NOTE)

The function of precipitation intensity-duration-frequency is needed for the planning and design of water resource projects. Short duration precipitation data are hardly available. However the total hourly-recorded available precipitation data for different parts of NWFP from different departments have been collected and analyzed for the present study. The data from WAPDA is found to be more au...

Derivation of Intensity -Duration-Frequency -Area(IDFA) Curves for Mashhad City

A knowledge of rainfall distribution over a finite area is needed for small bydraulic structures design. Hydrologists have always been concerned about Depth- Area- Duration (DAD) for a specific storm in a watershed. An intense storm occurred on June 6, 1992 which claimed some lives in parts of Mashhad, Khorasan Province, Iran. Data of rainfall depth at 29 raingauge stations around the city and ...

Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) rainfall curves, for data series and climate projection in African cities

Changes in the hydrologic cycle due to increase in greenhouse gases cause variations in intensity, duration, and frequency of precipitation events. Quantifying the potential effects of climate change and adapting to them is one way to reduce urban vulnerability. Since rainfall characteristics are often used to design water structures, reviewing and updating rainfall characteristics (i.e., Inten...
