abstract
normal 0 false false false en-us x-none ar-sa background: in some studies, the level of adenosine deaminase ( ada) in sputum and effusion liquids was used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (tb). but it is not always possible to access these materials. the goal of this study is to assess the diagnostic value of serum ada levels in pulmonary tb patients. materials and methods: in this study, 40 sputum smear-positive tb patients who were hospitalized and 40 non-tb patients who referred for surgeries were selected. a serum sample was collected and serum ada level was measured by ada kit. results: the average (sd) of serum ada in tb and non-tb patients were 20.88 (±5.97) and 10.69 (±2.98) u/l, respectively ( p value < 0.05). the best cut-off point was 14 u/l. the calculated area under the receiver operating characteristic (roc) curve was 0.955 (95% ci, 0.914-0.995); sensitivity was 92.7% (95% ci, 84.7-100) and specificity was 88.1% (95% ci, 78.3-97.8) ( p < 0.001). conclusion: serum ada level may be proposed as a proper index for tb diagnosis.

Diagnostic value of serum adenosine deaminase level in pulmonary tuberculosis
BACKGROUND In some studies, the level of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in sputum and effusion liquids was used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). But it is not always possible to access these materials. The goal of this study is to assess the diagnostic value of serum ADA levels in pulmonary TB patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 40 sputum smear-positive TB patients who were hospi...
full textdiagnostic value of serum adenosine deaminase (ada) level for pulmonary tuberculosis
conclusions serum ada activity with high specificity percentage may be a useful alternative test in restricted resource areas to rule out diagnosis of ptb. however, serum ada activity is not a useful tool for tb diagnosis. mean serum ada level in the ptb group was clearly higher than the mean serum ada in the other three groups. mean serum ada was 26 iu/l in ptb patients, 19.48 iu/l in patients...
full textDiagnostic Value of Serum Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) Level for Pulmonary Tuberculosis
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) is not always easy, thus employing methods with a short duration and acceptable sensitivity and specificity is necessary to diagnose TB. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) level for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 160 sex and age-matched sub...

Definitive laboratory diagnosis and confirmation of sputum smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis (SNPTB) poses a major challenge in the management and control of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in clinical practice. It is estimated that there are 1.22 cases of SNPTB and extra-pulmonary TB for every case of smear-positive TB in developing countries[1]. In resource-poor settings, smear negativ...
full textSerum adenosine deaminase: isoenzymes and diagnostic application.
Human adenosine deaminase (ADA; EC 3.5.4.4) consists of three isoenzymes: ADA1, ADA1+CP, and ADA2. We developed an electrophoretic technique to distinguish between these three isoenzymes. The isoenzyme pattern was studied in tissue and cell homogenates, as well as in serum from normal subjects and from patients with increased serum ADA who had either hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis, tubercu...
full textDiagnostic significance of adenosine deaminase in pleural tuberculosis.
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) is a major cause of pleural effusion, which in TB usually has lymphocytic and exudative characteristics. Analysis of adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity is a very useful diagnostic approach to achieve a more rapid and precise diagnosis in cases of Pleural TB (pTB). METHODS Fifty male and fifty female patients presenting with tuberculous pleural effusion was include...
