evaluation of bone mineral density in iranian hiv/aids patients
Authors
abstract
bone disorders have emerged as a worrisome complication in hiv-infected patients in recent years. it is not clear that hiv infection itself or antiretroviral treatment or both are causes of bone loss. however, most studies have found a high prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in hiv/aids patients. the objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in hiv-infected patients either untreated or receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy as compared with hiv negative persons. we also assessed the factors associated with these conditions. bone mineral density was assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scans at the hip and lumbar spine in 36 aids patients receiving antiretroviral therapy and 44 hiv infected patients not receiving antiretroviral therapy (naïve patients) and 40 hiv negative individuals as control. factors that affect bmd were also determined. prevalence of osteopenia or osteoporosis in different regions was significantly higher in hiv/aids patients compared with hiv negative subjects (77.3% in hiv positive naïve patients, 86.1% in haart-treated patients and 60% in the control group, p=0.002). mean serum alkaline phosphatase was higher in hiv/aids patients than the control group (p=0.003). osteopenia and osteoporosis in hiv-infected patients were associated with duration of hiv infection (p

Evaluation of Antioxidants in Bone Mineral Density of Iranian Osteoporotic Women
Objective(s) Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously renewed throughout life by the process of bone remodeling. Antioxidant system might be involved in the pathogenesis of bone loss, so the aim of this study was to evaluate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), vitamin C and vitamin E levels of plasma besides measuring enzymatic antioxidants, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) an...
full textEvaluation of Bone Mineral Density in Perimenopausal Period
Background: The menopausal transition called perimenopause, happens after the reproductive years, and isspecified with irregular menstrual cycles, perimenopause symptoms and hormonal changes. Women going throughperi menopausal period are vulnerable to bone loss.Osteoporosis is one of the most common debilitating metabolic bone diseases ,especially in the women almostaround 50 years .This study ...
full textFrequency of Decreased Bone Mineral Density and Its Risk Factors during Childhood among Iranian Hemophilia Patients
This study was undertaken to assess the frequency of decreased bone mineral density and its risk factors as well as its impact on the quality of life during childhood among hemophiliac patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty seven children with severe hemophilia A and B, referred to Mofid Children’s Hospital during 2010, were selected. For all patients the joint score, body mass indexes, bone...

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term changes in bone density profile among survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Patients and Methods: This was a 5 year prospective study comprised of thirty-one survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia with a mean age of 11.8 (4.6) years, who completed therapy at least 1 year previously (according to the ...
full textBone Mineral Density in Hemodialysis Patients
Introduction Marked progress has been achieved in the management of hemodialysis (HD) in recent years; resulting in eliciting a new issue that renal osteodystrophy has become one of the most serious complications in these patients. Recently, non-invasive techniques to measure bone mineral density (BMD), such as dual photon absorptiometry, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and quantitativ...
