a laboratory investigation on the effect of mbnpv and indoxacarb against the beet armyworm, spodoptera exigua (lep., noctuidae) larvae

abstract
beet armyworm, spodoptera exigua hübner, (lep., noctuidae), is one of the most important polyphagous pests of sugar beet in iran and many other countries. in most cases, this pest needs to be controlled for a few times in a crop season. baculoviruses are effective biological control agents which could be integrated to control program of this pest with other integrated pest management (ipm) elements. considering this target, we did some experiments using mbnpv and indoxacarb against the different larval stages of s. exigua. on the basis of preliminary tests, the applied doses were 185 pib/mm2 and 3.75 µg/mm2 leaf area for virus and indoxacarb, respectively. it was found that there were significant differences among different larval instars for susceptibility to virus such that susceptibility decreased as larval instar increased. there was no significant difference between two successive instar larvae for susceptibility to indoxacarb although, overally, susceptibility decreased as larval instar increased. according to the results, if treatment of virus is used on early instars of s. exigua, this may lead to substantial mortality of this pest.

Comparative demographic parameters of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lep.: Noctuidae) on four commercial sugar beet cultivars
The effects of four sugar beet cultivars (Anaconda, Rozier, Evelina and Flores) on the life table parameters of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lep.: Noctuidae) were evaluated at 26 ± 1 °C, 60 ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16: 8 h (L: D). The highest gross and net fecundity rates were obtained on Anaconda (2573.31 ± 27.78 and 1576.31 ± 16.65 eggs/female, respectively). The net r...

full textlethal effects of pyriproxyfen, spinosad, and indoxacarb and sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen on the 1st instars larvae of beet armyworm, spodoptera exigua hübner (lepidoptera: noctuidae) in the laboratory
the beet armyworm (spodoptera exigua hübner) is an important pest of many agricultural crops all over the world. most of the sugar beet growing regions in iran are infested. in this study, the acute lethal effects of pyriproxyfen, spinosad, and indoxacarb as well as sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen on the 1st instar s. exigua were assessed by leaf dip bioassay method. mortality was recorded 48...
full textTrans-regional migration of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in North-East Asia
The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a serious polyphagous insect pest worldwide. This species is known as a long-distance migrant, and previous studies on its migration have been mostly carried out in regions where it can overwinter. However, what pattern of seasonal migration this species exhibits in regions where it cannot overwinter (i.e., the 'summer b...
full textRelationship of flight and reproduction in beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a migrant lacking the oogenesis-flight syndrome.
The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, undertakes long-distance migration. We used flight mills to investigate the interaction between flight and reproduction in this species given the apparent absence of the oogenesis-flight syndrome. This syndrome, common in many migratory insects, is characterized by a suite of traits including migration during the pre-oviposition period followed by a switch ...
full textcold hardiness process of beet armyworm larvae, spodoptera exigua (lepidoptera: noctuidae)
cold hardiness is one of the most common adaptations of insects at low temperatures. to understand the cold hardiness strategy of beet armyworm, spodoptera exigua (hübner), six temperature treatments were tested on the last instar larvae. supercooling points of treatments were not significantly different. two sugars, glucose and trehalose, as well as three polyols, myo-inositol, glycerol and so...
