evaluation of process performance and sludge properties of an up-flow staged sludge blanket (ussb) reactor for treatment of molasses wastewater
Authors
abstract
a combination of an acidification reactor and an up-flow staged sludge bed (ussb) reactor wasapplied to treatment of molasses wastewater. the ussb, equipped with three gas solid separators, wasselected because of superior organic removal by means of good retention of granular sludge. the combinedsystem was continuously operated at mesophilic (35°c) conditions for 600 days. the ussb achieved a highorganic removal rate of 37 kgcod/m3 day (organic loading rate of 43 kgcod/m3 day with 86.2% codremoval). the ussb retained high sludge concentration of approximately 58 gvss/l based on the reactorvolume. the retained granular sludge had good settle-ability with a sludge volume index (svi) of 4 to 20 ml/gss. the retained sludge possessed a sufficient level of methanogenic activities for acetate (1.2 gcod/gvss day) and for hydrogen (1.7 gcod/gvss day). analysis of microbial community revealed that genus methanobacterium as hydrogen utilizing methanogen and order methanosarcinales as acetate utilizingmethanogen were detected in the retained sludge of the ussb reactor. the superior performance of the ussb was attributed to good retention of a large amount of granular sludge with high methanogenic activity.

full textConsidering an Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket for the Treatment of Spearmint Essential Oil Wastewater and Biogas Production
The aromatic and dark-colored spearmint essential oil wastewater (SEOW) generally contains a large amount of organic matter, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), phenolic compounds, and inorganic contents. In this study, the pollutant removal performance and biogas production rate of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor used for the treatment of SEOW were investigated. During t...
full textPerformance evaluation of modified up flow septic tanks reactor for treatment of synthetic wastewater
Background and Objective: Considering 829000 annual diarrhoeal deaths due to water pollution worldwide, the World Health Organization has emphasized that countries should reduce this rate by upgrading their wastewater treatment systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a modified up flow septic tanks reactor for treatment of synthetic wastewater. Materials and Metho...
full textUpflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (uasb) Reactor in Wastewater Treatment
Under anaerobic conditions, organic pollutants in wastewater are degraded by microbes producing methane and carbon dioxide. The degradation process is effective compared to the more conventional aerobic processes and produces only 5-10% of sludge. This saves considerably on cost associated with the sludge disposal. Among anaerobic technologies, the most popular ones is the upflow anaerobic slud...
full textTreatability Studies on Hybrid Up - Flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor for Pulp and Paper Mill Wastewater
In India, Pulp & paper industries have been large uses of portable water and consequently large generator of waste water. Anaerobic treatment of paper processing waste water has a distinct advantage of recovery of inherent energy in the form of methane gas with much less sludge production. A hybrid reactor that capitalizes on the positive features of anaerobic filter(AF) and up-flow anaerobic s...
