abstract
a study was conducted to evaluate the effects of two laying systems (floor versus cage) on egg production, egg quality, and microbial safety. one hundred and eighty 42 wk old laying hens were separated into two groups of 90 hens each, and housed in laying cages and a floor laying system. eggs from the hens were collected for 2 weeks, and hen-day egg production, egg quality (whole egg, albumen, yolk and shell weights), saleability, and marketability were measured. total bacteria counts on the egg shell surface were also enumerated at 0, 4 and 8 h after laying. results indicated that hen-day egg production by hens in the cage system (95%) was significantly (p

full textUnderstanding Mortality Rates of Laying Hens in Cage-Free Egg Production Systems
In cage-free egg production systems, concerns have been raised over hen mortality rates. High mortality is an obvious indicator of poor welfare, and problems should be addressed without delay. It is important to note, however, that mortality can vary substantially between hen flocks, and that some cage-free systems have healthy flocks that do not suffer substantial death losses. These systems c...
full textComparison of Aviary, Barn and Conventional Cage Raising of Chickens on Laying Performance and Egg Quality
This study intended to compare the productive performance of three different layer raising systems; conventional cage (CC), barn (BR) and aviary (AV). The AV is welfare bestowed housing that allows free locomotion for birds within the BR. The BR allows bird's free locomotion inside BR but without multilevel structures. Both pullets and cockerels were housed together in both AV and BR, but only ...
full textEffects of laying hens housing system on laying performance, egg quality characteristics, and egg microbial contamination
The objective of this study was to compare the performance, egg quality, and microbial contamination of egg shells from hens maintained in different housing systems, such as conventional and enriched cages, litter, and aviaries. The housing system significantly (P < 0.001) influenced the performance characteristics. The highest egg production, lowest daily feed consumption, and feed conversion ...

Cage hygiene, laying location, and egg quality: the effects of linings and litter provision in furnished cages for laying hens.
This study investigates the influence of litter provision and linings used for nests and pecking and scratching areas on cage hygiene, laying location, and egg quality. Research was carried out in furnished cages, each housing 60 beak-trimmed ISA Brown hens. Four different treatments were compared in a factorial arrangement, including 2 different nest linings (artificial turf vs. plastic mesh),...
