abstract

persian gulf is a tectonic intra-continental sediment basin in which 40% of global oil and gastrade carries out and is a rich oil and gas resource. persian gulf area is about 236000km2 that is one of thelargest marine habitats including corals, sponges, crabs, fishes, clams, scaphpoodas, cephalopodas, foraminiferas, echinodermatas, ostracodas and bryozoas. some of them live in seabed sediments of persian gulf and their footprints of are still available and visible on the sediments. this study aimed to identify the effects of oil filters, drilling platforms and ship traffics on seabed sediments. we used 240 surface sediment, sampled sea cruise named (mg-2008-pg cruise) within six fractions and sedimentary components were studied during morphoscopic and morphometric tests by binocular microscope as well as electron microscope in some cases. chemical synthesis carried out with chemical analysis with icp instrument and organic material proportion determination by rock-eval device. results indicate that the effect of pollution in persian gulf has endangered fauna environments and absorption by shells has changed skin color to red, grey, and black. some shells have deformed and lost their ornament. in addition, pollution has led to change the color of ooids. it identified that black color was due to existence of hydrous iron sulfide, organic materials, and oil pollutants. the source of elements could rather be from organic sources such as oil.

Assessing some heavy metals pollutions in sediments of the northern Persian Gulf (Bushehr province)

Background: Land and water pollution by heavy metals is a universal issue. Although the pollution affects all countries, but its range and severity vary hugely. The pollution of the marine environment by heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Marine sediments can be sensitive indicators for monitoring contaminants in aquatic environments. Methods: The concentration of 10 elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu...

Heavy Metals, Trace Elements and Petroleum Hydrocarbons Pollutions in the Arabian Gulf: Review

The Arabian Gulf environmental status was assessed based on studies conducted in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen during 1983-2011. This review examines all sorts of pollutions in the Arabian Gulf area over the last three decades. Approximately 50 published studies were reviewed in order to determine the pollution status in the Arabian Gulf regar...

Ecological risk assessment using heavy metals from surface sediments of Nayband Bay and Asaluyeh region (Northern Persian Gulf)

The toxicity of heavy metals in sediments of the Nayband Bay and Asaluyeh region and potential ecological risk to sediment organisms assessed. Three stations with different degrees of vulnerability of South Pars Oil and Gas Activities (1: Control - 2: medium affected and 3: severely affected) were selected in the study area. Sediment sampling at each station in both cold and hot seasons (2010) ...

Study of Metals Concentrations in Surface Sediments of the Persian Gulf Coastal Area (Bushehr Province)

Since heavy metals are considered as one of the major pollutants threatening, the main goal of this study was to bring out the concentrations of Pb, Zn and Mn in the surface sediments off Bushehr in the Persian Gulf. For this purpose, after collection of samples, the concentrations of the three metals in surface sediments were measured through the atomic absorption. The results were compared wi...

Heavy metals contaminant evaluation in sediments of Khour-e-Musa creeks, northwest of Persian Gulf

Surface sediments contamination to heavy metals was evaluated in eight creeks of Mahshahr coastal waters (north-west of the Persian Gulf) from October. 2005 to November 2006. Sediments were collected seasonally by Peterson grab and the concentrations of heavy metals were measured using voltammetry and polarography methods. The range and the mean concentrations obtained in mg/kg were 15.03-35.16...
