introduction: biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. also, living lichens are known to accumulate metals across their surface. materials and methods: in this study, the biosorption of cadmium ions cd (ii) by the lichens acarospora strigata, lecanora muralis and caloplaca aurantia was investigated in aqueous solution in a batch system with respect to ph, biomass dosage, temperature initial cadmium ion concentration and contact time. results: the biosorption capacity of the biomass was found to be 6.9 mg/g at ph 7 for l. muralis, 7.6 mg/g at ph 6 for a. strigata and 8.6 mg/g at ph 7 for c. aurantia. the experimental adsorption data were fitted to the freundlich adsorption model. experimental data were also tested in terms of kinetic characteristics and it was found that biosorption processes of cd (ii) ions followed well pseudo-second-order kinetics. conclusion: the results indicated that the biomass of l. muralis, a. strigata and c. aurantia are suitable biosorbents for removing cd (ii) from aqueous solutions and among these three species, c. aurantia has greater ability to remove cadmium from aqueous solutions.

Ions from Aqueous Solutions by Biosorption Processes

Due to the disadvantages of heavy metal removal from aqueous sytems by conventional methods, alternative new methods have been investigated lately. Biosorption is one of these new methods. In this method, metal ions are transported into cell structure, and removal is ensured by several mechanisms that occured between living or non-living microorganisms and metal ions. The metal removal, the use...

Antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of the lichens Cladonia furcata, Lecanora atra and Lecanora muralis

BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to investigate in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of the acetone extracts of the lichens Cladonia furcata, Lecanora atra and Lecanora muralis. METHODS Antioxidant activity was evaluated by five separate methods: free radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, reducing power, determination of total phenolic compounds an...

Removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) Ions from ‎Aqueous Solutions by Cadmium Sulfide ‎Nanoparticles

In this study, cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) were prepared, characterized and used as a new adsorbent for simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Using a batch adsorption method, the effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and temperature were studied and optimized. Removal efficiencies, higher than 98% were obtained for both the met...

Biosorption of Pentachlorophenol from Aqueous Solutions by Aspergillus Niger Biomass

Background: This study aimed to investigate the biosorption of pentachlorophenol on Aspergillus niger biomass as a method for removal of pentachlorophenol from aqueous solutions. Methods: Modified A. niger biomass with NaOH was used to absorb the pentachlorophenol. The impacts of various experimental parameters like primary pentachlorophenol concentration, pH of the solution, contact time, a...
