Physicians are rarely confronted with problems in this regard. The following comments are provided as a matter of review. More extensive discussion may be found in the references listed at the end of this article. Several tests are in use. Most common of these are the Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) Test, the Veneral Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) Test, the Treponema Pallidum-Particle Agglutination (TP-PA) Test, and the Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody Absorption (FTA-ABS) Test.

An unusual case of serological discord.
" Serological discord" or " serological dissociation" are expressive terms used by French workers to describe the finding that different serological tests for syphilis give variable results on the same specimen of serum. When a battery consisting of a number of tests is used, an occasional discord among the results is inevitable and may render interpretation of the results difficult. It is most...
متن کاملA Century of syphilis serology
Introduction The year 2006 represented the centenary of the first diagnostic serological test, the Wasserman complement fixation test for the diagnosis of syphilis. In this article I will relate some developments I have observed in the day-to-day running of a diagnostic serology laboratory over the thirty years preceding this centenary. I have assumed some background knowledge and elected to di...
متن کاملInterpretation of positive serological tests for syphilis in pregnancy.
The remarkable decline in the incidence of syphilis in the first half of the 20th century tempted many observers to share the view of Illingworth (1959) that it was a disappearing disease. Since 1957, however, there has been an unmistakable upward trend in many parts of the world (Stallworthy and Bourne, 1966; Walter and Israel, 1965), and many cases of florid congenital syphilis have been repo...

Syphilis, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, is an infection recognized since antiquity. It was first reported at the end of the 15th century in Europe. Infections may be sexually transmitted as well as spread from an infected mother to her fetus or through blood transfusions. The laboratory diagnosis of syphilis infection is complex. Because this organism cannot be cul...
متن کاملCongenital syphilis in one of twins.
When congenital syphilis occurs in twins the degree of clinical involvement can vary greatly between one twin and the other (Haslund, 1924; Dennie, 1924) and caution is therefore required in claiming that one of twins has escaped, infection. Several examples have been reported but those before 1906, being based on clinical and autopsy findings only, should probably be discounted. Later examples...
متن کاملAre serological tests of value in diagnosing and monitoring response to treatment of syphilis in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus?
To assess the value of serological tests in diagnosing and monitoring the response to treatment of syphilis in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), case notes of eight homosexual men with a history of treated syphilis, positive reactions to serological tests for syphilis, and documented subsequent conversion to HIV seropositivity were studied. No change was noted in se...
