Behavioural Genetics: Finding Genes that Cause Complex Trait Variation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Identifying genes that influence phenotypic variation is extremely difficult, especially when the allelic variants only have a small effect. A recent study has used a novel approach to identify a gene that affects the behaviour of mice.

Genetics and general cognitive ability : Article : Nature
General cognitive ability (g), often referred to as 'general intelligence', predicts social outcomes such as educational and occupational levels far better than any other behavioural trait. g is one of the most heritable behavioural traits, and genes that contribute to the heritability of g will certainly be identified. What are the scientific and social implications of finding genes associated...
متن کاملFour Fundamental Gaps In Quantitative Genetics
Significant problems in the methods and interpretation of classical quantitative genetics have not been widely recognized or resolved. The problems arise from four fundamental gaps: "Genetic" and "environmental" fractions of variation in traits are distinct from measurable genetic and environmental entities or factors underlying the traits’ development; Standard formulas for partitioning variat...
متن کاملMore than the sum of its parts: a complex epistatic network underlies natural variation in thermal preference behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Behavior is a complex trait that results from interactions among multiple genes and the environment. Both additive and nonadditive effects are expected to contribute to broad-sense heritability of complex phenotypes, although the relative contribution of each of these mechanisms is unknown. Here, we mapped genetic variation in the correlated phenotypes of thermal preference and isothermal dispe...
متن کاملThe genetic architecture of complex traits in teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis): new evidence from association mapping.
Previous association analyses showed that variation at major regulatory genes contributes to standing variation for complex traits in Balsas teosinte, the progenitor of maize. This study expands our previous association mapping effort in teosinte by testing 123 markers in 52 candidate genes for association with 31 traits in a population of 817 individuals. Thirty-three significant associations ...
متن کاملOffspring genes indirectly influence sibling and maternal behavioural strategies over resource share
Family members show behavioural strategies predicted to maximize individual fitness. These behaviours depend directly on genes expressed in focal individuals but also indirectly on genes expressed in other family members. However, how sibling and parental behavioural strategies are modified by genes expressed in family members, and to what degree, remains unclear. To answer this question, we ha...
