ment has been subjected to EPA's peer and administrative reviews and has been approved for publication as an EPA document. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation for use. ii Foreword The EPA is charged by Congress with protecting the Nation's land, air, and water resources. Under a mandate of national environmental laws, the Agency strives to formulate and implement actions leading to a compatible balance between human activities and the ability of natural systems to support and nurture life. To meet these mandates, EPA's research program is providing data and technical support for solving environmental problems today and building a science knowledge base necessary to manage our ecological resources wisely, understand how pollutants affect our health, and prevent or reduce environmental risks in the future. The National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) is the EPA center for investigation of technical and management approaches for reducing risks from threats to human health and the environment. The focus of the NRMRL research program is on methods for the prevention and control of pollution to air, land, water, and subsurface resources; protection of water quality in public water systems; remediation of contaminated sites and groundwater; and prevention and control of indoor air pollution. The goals of this research effort are to catalyze development and implementation of innovative , cost-effective environmental technologies; develop scientific and engineering information needed by EPA to support regulatory and policy decisions; and provide technical support and information transfer to ensure effective implementation of environmental regulations and strategies. This publication has been produced as part of the NRMRL strategic, long-term research plan. It is published and made available by the EPA Office of Research and Development to assist the user community and to link researchers with their clients. Abstract Sonotech, Inc. (Sonotech) of Atlanta, GA, has developed a pulse combustion burner technology that claims to offer benefits when applied in a variety of combustion processes. The technology incorporates a combustor that can be tuned to induce large-amplitude acoustic or sonic pulsations inside combustion process units, such as boilers or incinerators. This report summarizes the findings of an evaluation of the pulse combustion burner system developed by Sonotech. The information is intended for remedial managers, environmental consultants, and other potential users who may consider using the technology to treat Superfund and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) hazardous wastes. It presents …

Modeling and simulation of furnace pulse firing improvements using fuzzy control
Pulse firing offers significant process and productivity benefits, such as improved temperature uniformity and high heat transfer rates to the product load through maximum system turndown and utilizes the system’s burners at their most efficient firing rates. However, overshoot and undershoot is unavoidable. To minimize these effects, the system operates the burner at an enhanced turndown rate....
متن کاملPreliminary Design of Spacecraft Attitude Control with Pulse-Width Pulse-Frequency Modulator for Rest-to-Rest Maneuvers
In this paper, the preferred region of design parameters for quasi-normalized equations of single-axis attitude control of rigid spacecraft using pulse-width pulse-frequency modulator (PWPFM) is presented for rest-to-rest maneuvers. Using the quasi-normalized equations for attitude control reduces the system parameters, that is, the moment of inertia, the filter gain, and the maximum torque of ...
متن کاملModeling of the Combustion Oscillations and Soot Formation in Aerovalved Pulse Combustors
This paper describes the modifications and evolution of a thermal pulse combustionmodel for predicting the combustion oscillations of an aerovalved 250 kW pulse combustorincorporating a soot formation-combustion model. Validation of the model is carried out from theexperimental data of an aerovalved Helmholtz type pulse combustor, where a sinusoidal air inlet massflow coupled with pressure osci...
متن کاملSpectral Shape of UWB Signals-Influence of Modulation Format, Multiple Access Scheme and Pulse Shape
This paper studies how to design the spectrum of a UWB signal in accordance with the FCC regulations and IEEE 802.15.3a recommendations. We show that the conventional UWB system with pulse-position modulation and time-hopping multiple access gives rise to spectral lines that violate the regulations. The impact of different modulation and multiple access schemes on the spectrum shaping is derive...
